Exim Bank (Tanzania) (EBT), is a commercial bank in Tanzania. The bank is one of the commercial banks licensed by the Bank of Tanzania, the national banking regulator.[2]
Overview
EBT is a large banking institution, providing commercial banking services to individuals, small-to-medium sized businesses (SMEs), and large corporate clients.[3] As of September 2013, the bank's total asset valuation was estimated at over US$733.33 million (TZS:1.15 trillion), with shareholders' equity valued at approximately US$86.72 million (TZS:136 billion). At that time, the bank was ranked 5th out of the 34 licensed commercial banks in the country, by assets.[4]
In December 2010 EBT was the winner for the Best Presented Financial Statement for 2009 at an event in Arusha hosted by the National Board of Accountants and Auditors.[5]
History
EBT was formed in 1997 by a group of Tanzanian businesspeople, following the liberalization of the Tanzanian economy. It reportedly broke even within the first five months of operation.[6] As of September 2010, EBT maintains a banking subsidiary in the Comoros (Exim Bank (Comores)), which it owns 100%. EBT remains the only indigenous Tanzanian Bank with outside subsidiaries. In April 2010, the bank received authorization from the Bank of Tanzania, the country's banking regulator, to establish subsidiaries in Djibouti and in Zambia, thus setting up the Exim Bank Group, a regional banking financial services organization.[7] EBT also owns a minority shareholding (5.8%) in the National Microfinance Bank.[8]
