Everybody (Shinee song)

"Everybody" is a K-Pop song of complextro-dubstep music genre performed by the South Korean contemporary R&B idol group Shinee. Written by Cho Yoonkyung^[3], two versions of "Everybody" exist: the original Korean-language version, which served as one of the two lead singles for the promotional cycle for the group's fifth Korean EP Everybody (2013), other one being "Symptoms", and a Japanese-language version, which was included as one of the three tracks on their ninth Japanese CD single 3 2 1 (2013).^[4] The Korean version of "Everybody" was made available for download on October 14, 2013 under the record label of S.M. Entertainment and distributing label of KMP Holdings.^[5]

Music video

On October 7, 2013, SM Town's official YouTube channel unveiled an image teaser for Shinee's fifth EP Everybody.^[6] Next day, a music video teaser of the title track of the same name was uploaded on the same channel.^[7] The music video was a day later on October 9, 2013.^[8] The video showcased the boys in an air force military concept, similar to the navy concept of their label mates Girls' Generation's "Genie" era. It was directed by Jang Jae-hyuk, who stated that various techniques and equipment like the steadicam, technocrane and camera matrix, were used to film the music video.^[9] The heavily structured choreography of the song was produced by Shinee's long time associate Tony Testa who also collaborated with the boys on their former hit singles including "Sherlock", "Dream Girl" and "Beautiful".^[10] The agency's resident choreographer Gregory Hwang also co-produced the dance moves.^[11]

Critical reception

Billboard's K-pop columnist Jeff Benjamin wrote "while finding a delicous balance of hyperactive EDM and pop stylings is commendable, the most impressive point of Shinee's "Everybody" comeback is the choreography - some of 2013's best".^[12]

Jakob Dorof of Tiny Mix Tapes wrote "Everybody is proof positive that, even in a culture industry designed to minimize the role of real musicianship, talent will find its way to the top. SHINee have been long revered as some of the very best live vocalists and dancers in pop music, and it's promising to hear their professional handlers finally reward those skills with a full set of songs to match." ^[13]

Live performances

The first live performance of "Everybody" was included in the set-list of Shinee Comeback Special at Gangnam Hallyu Festival on October 6, 2013, in Samseong-dong, Seoul. The performances were streamed on SM Town's YouTube channel.^[14] The first broadcast live performance, however, was through M.net's music show M! Countdown on October 10. 2013.^[15] This was followed by performances at KBS Music Bank on October 11,^[16] at MBC Show! Music Core on October 12, at SBS The Music Trend (Inkigayo) on October 13,^[17] and at MBC Music Show Champion on October 16, 2013.

Japanese version

The Japanese version was included as one of the three tracks on their 9th Japanese CD single "3 2 1" which was released on December 4, 2013 under the distributing label of Universal Music Japan.^[18]
