Memphis Eve Hewson (born 7 July 1991) is an Irish actress. She is the daughter of U2's lead singer Bono and activist Ali Hewson. In 2010 Hewson started dating One Tree Hill actor James Lafferty. The couple split in November 2013 after over three and half years of dating. [3][4] Her first big role was in Paolo Sorrentino's This Must Be the Place in 2011, alongside Sean Penn.[5]
Early life
Hewson was born in Dublin in 1991, the second daughter of activist Ali Hewson (née Alison Stewart) and singer Bono (Paul David Hewson). She was named after being born on 7 July at 7:00; "eve" is the middle of the word "seven".[6] She has three siblings: older sister Jordan and younger brothers Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi Q and John Abraham. She was educated at St. Andrew's College in Dublin and attended New York University.[7]
U2 song "Kite" was inspired by a moment when Bono took a kite up on Killiney Hill with his two daughters, but the kite blew off and smashed and Eve asked if they could go home to play with their Tamagotchis.[6]
Career
Although her father and mother were against Hewson performing,[8] she made her acting début in 2005 alongside her sister Jordan in Erica Dunton's short film Lost and Found.[9] She made her feature-length début in 2008 in another film directed by Dunton, The 27 Club.[10] The same year Hewson took part in an acting programme at the New York Film Academy. In 2010 she appeared in the music video and accompanying short film for Irish band The Script's song "For the First Time".[11]
In 2011, Hewson appeared alongside Sean Penn and Frances McDormand in Paolo Sorrentino's This Must Be the Place, playing the role of a young punk called Mary.[5] She will play Yvonne in an upcoming thriller film called Blood Ties by French director Guillaume Canet.[12] Hewson received her degree from New York University on 22 May 2013, her father turned down an offer of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters on the same day.[13]
In July 2013, Jack Quaid of The Hunger Games, and Hewson, asked fans to help them fund a new film called Roadies using crowdsourcing.[14] In September of the same year, Hewson appeared with James Gandolfini in the American comedy film Enough Said (one of Gandolfini's final film roles).[15] Hewson also co-stars with Clive Owen in Steven Soderbergh's TV drama The Knick.[16] In November 2013 Hewson was nominated for the Tatler Irish Woman of the Year award, for her work in films.[17]
