Cultivar | 'Evans', also known as 'Bali' |
Origin | Alberta, Canada, 1923 or earlier |
The Evans' cherry is a sour cherry cultivar rediscovered in an old orchard near Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
It is significant as cherries were once thought to not grow in the harsh climate of the Canadian prairies, yet the first specimen, discovered, or more accurately, rediscovered, by Ieuan Evans, had been growing in a local garden since the 1920s. Dr. Evans once thought it originated in Minnesota, but according to more recent reports, he believes it may have come from Alaska where they were given out to settlers. The Evans' cherry is sold in the US by the ST Lawrence Nurseries under the name of "Bali".
