The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA; /ˈɛkə/ EK-ə)^{[citation needed]} is an agency of the European Union which manages the technical, scientific and administrative aspects of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) system. ECHA is the driving force among regulatory authorities in implementing the EU's groundbreaking chemicals legislation for the benefit of human health and the environment as well as for innovation and competitiveness. ECHA helps companies to comply with the legislation, advances the safe use of chemicals, provides information on chemicals and addresses chemicals of concern. It is sited in Helsinki, Finland.

The Agency, headed by Executive Director Geert Dancet, started working on 1 June 2007.

REACH Authorisation List

The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) has published the REACH Authorization List, in an effort to tighten the use of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC)1. The list is an official recommendation from the ECHA to the European Commission.^[1] The list is also regularly updated and expanded, and currently comprises a total of 144 SVHC.

To sell or use these substances, manufacturers, importers and retailers in the European Union (EU) must apply for authorization from the ECHA. The applicant is to submit a chemical safety report on the risks entailed by the substance, as well as an analysis of possible alternative substances or technologies including present and future research and development processes.^[2]
