EtherCON

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The EtherCON is a ruggedized and lockable Ethernet over twisted pair wiring connector manufactured by Neutrik. It is designed for professional audio and stage lighting network applications.[1] It is also used in military applications.

Design

The design is modeled after the XLR connector with a circular hard metal shell and a locking latch. The cable plug is always male and is designed to fit over a standard 8P8C modular connector. There are two cable connector versions. One for use during manufacturing of cables and one that goes over an RJ-45 connector on an existing cable. The chassis connector is always female and has the standard form factor of an XLR panel connector. The chassis connector allows for use with both an EtherCON connector and a standard 8P8C plug. The chassis connectors are rated for either Cat 5e or Cat 6 compatibility. The cable connector can go over either a Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable.[2]

Applications

EtherCON connectors are often used with Tactical Ethernet cable to build Ethernet cables that can be used in high traffic areas with heavy foot or light vehicle traffic.

EtherCON connectors are used on many audio over Ethernet and audio over IP products.
