Education and career

Solingen earned her B.A. and M.A. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and her Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1987.

Etel Solingen is the Tierney Chair in Piece Studies at UC Irvine.[2] She was appointed to this position in early Fall, 2013.[3] She succeeds Prof. Patrick M. Morgan in this position. Previously, she was Chancellor's Professor of Political Science and President of the International Studies Association (2012-2013).[3] Solingen has served as chair of the IGCC's Steering Committee, President of ISA’s International Political Economy Section and APSA’s International History and Politics Section.[4]

Solingen serves on several editorial boards and has received fellowships and grants from the SSRC, the MacArthur Foundation, and the USIP. Her book Nuclear Logics was launched at a presentation at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.[5] It won the Woodrow Wilson Award for best book in Political Science, and the Jervis-Schroeder Prize for best work in International History and Politics.[6]

In an article-length review essay published in the journal International Security,] William Potter of the Monterey Institute and Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova described the book as, "The cutting edge of nonproliferation research." [7] Her work was also cited in a blog post in The Guardian newspaper.[8]

Solingen has written three books and edited two volumes. Her first book, based upon her dissertation, is Industrial Policy, Technology, and International Bargaining and was published by Stanford University Press.[9] Her second book, "Regional Orders at Century's Dawn," was published by Princeton University Press in 1998.[10] "Nuclear Logics" was also published by Princeton University Press. Her two edited volumes include "Sanctions, Statecraft, and Nuclear Proliferation," published by Cambridge University Press in 2012.[11] Her most recent edited volume is "Comparative Regionalism: Economics and Statecraft" published by Routledge.[12]

Her work has appeared in many journals, including American Political Science Review, ISQ, and Comparative Politics. Her other recent publications include a chapter contributed a to William Potter and Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova's edited volume, Forecasting Nuclear Proliferation in the 21st Century that discusses Japan's nuclear status.[13]

Solingen co-edited a special issue of the journal International Studies Review with Prof. Tanja Borzel of the Free University of Berlin. This special issue (forthcoming in 2014, vol. 16, no. 2) is entitled, "The Politics of International and Regional Diffusion."[14]

Solingen gives many talks on nuclear proliferation in front of academic audiences. Recent presentations have included the University of Minnesota, George Washington University, and American University.[15]

She also gave a talk entitled, "Dilemmas of Nonproliferation Statecraft" at Oxford University's Martin School in March 2013.[16] In May 2013, Solingen gave a talk on proliferation to the Claremont Graduate University in southern California.[17] On June 3, 2013, Solingen gave the Celia Moh Professorship Public Lecture at Singapore Management University. This talk was entitled, "Why do some states seek nuclear weapons?" [18] In July 2013, Solingen gave a talk at the Free University of Berlin entitled, "Ten Dilemmas of Nonproliferation Statecraft", with Thomas Risse serving as the discussant.Later that summer, Solingen spoke on the subject of regional governance in the Middle East to a conference at the European University Institute. Presidency of the International Studies Association (ISA), 2012-2013

In early January, 2011, Solingen was selected as President-elect of the International Studies Association.[20] She became President of the large professional body in March, 2012 during the annual meeting in San Diego, CA. Solingen's Presidential Address was republished as an article in the International Studies Quarterly. The piece was entitled, "Of Dominoes and Firewalls: The Domestic, Regional, and Global Politics of International Diffusion," and appeared in the December 2012 issue of the journal (Vol. 56, No. 4).[21] In one of her last acts as President of the International Studies Association, Solingen moderated a discussion on nuclear proliferation that included the Secretary General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, alongside the head of the MacArthur Foundation, Amb. Robert Gallucci.[22]

Solingen serves as a Research Scholar with the University of California's Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC).[4]

Future President of the American Political Science Association (APSA)

Solingen is frequently rumored to be under consideration for election to the Presidency of the American Political Science Association (APSA), the leading professional body of Political Scientists in the United States.[23]

Personal

Solingen was born and raised in Argentina, and earned her bachelor's and first master's degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the 1970s. She is married and has two children. She currently resides in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, gardening, spending time with her family, and traveling. Solingen raises money for and donates to several charitable causes, including Race for the Cure, SPCA, and the UNCF.[2]
