Biography

Early life

Eric Nam was born and raised in Atlanta on November 17, 1988. He graduated from The Lovett School in 2007 where he played soccer and played in the orchestra. For his senior project, he recorded his own solo CD that was very popular with the student body. He then flew to Boston where he studied Bachelor of International Studies at Boston College. He also studied in Beijing for a year. He can speak Korean, English, Spanish, Chinese, and is currently learning Japanese. When he was younger, he became a part of the Atlanta Boy Choir and toured in Italy where he got to sing for mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.[1]

Pre-Debut

Before making it to the K-Pop industry, Eric Nam was already making cover songs and posting them on YouTube. The cover songs include Taeyang's "Wedding Dress" and "I Need A Girl", "End of the Road" by Boys 2 Men, and "Someone Like You" by Adele.[2] He also once auditioned in SM Entertainment when he was in high school, but he didn't get in. He didn't give up, though, and continued uploading YouTube videos.[1] One time, a JYP representative called him after watching his cover songs and suggested that he should go to a JYP audition in New York. However, he decided not to audition because during that time, he still had to focus on his studies.[3] On June 13 of 2011, he posted a cover song of Lonely by 2ne1, and soon discovered by a Korean broadcasting company, MBC.[4] After MBC watched his YouTube audition, he was flown out to Korea for an audition in person.[5]

2011-12: Birth Of A Great Star 2 and B2M Management

Eric Nam became a part of a talent search show, Birth of a Great Star 2 as a contestant in December, 2011. He stayed in the competition for about 8 months and made it to the Top 5.[5] During the competition, it was reported that Korean baseball legend, Chan Ho Park, gave his support to Eric.[6] After the show, he flew back to USA and performed at Kollaboration Boston 2 on April 21, 2012.[5] Kollaboration is a "nationwide talent competition that empowers Asian-Americans through entertainment."[1] He also started making cover songs again including Katy Perry's "Part of Me" with Megan Lee, Mike Choi and Hong Mayer,[7] and Jason Mraz's "I Won't Give Up",[8] after almost a year.

In June 2012, he headed back to Korea for his project group, Namaste's single, "제주도의 푸른밤" (The Blue Night of Jeju Island) and was released after a month.[9] He also became an MC at MBC Star Audition Season 3 that was held in August in New York.

On September 25, he officially joined B2M Entertainment company and became a solo artist. The company has said that they will fully support Eric Nam's growth as a musician.[10]

On December 14, B2M Entertainment confirmed that Eric Nam is planned to have a debut in January or February 2013.[11]

2013: Solo Debut "Cloud 9" Album

On January 14, B2M Entertainment hinted Eric Nam's debut through twitter. They tweeted: “We are now releasing the jacket cover of Eric Nam’s debut album ‘Cloud 9‘ which will drop on January 23.”[12] Two days after the tweet, Eric has finally released a video teaser for his debut mini album. His title track will be entitled "Heaven's Door", a song collaborated with Sweetune[13] On January 23, the official music video of "Heaven's Door" was released alongside his mini-album entitled Cloud 9.[14]
