Equilibristics

Equilibristics is an umbrella term used to describe a number of circus skills which involve balancing or maintaining equilibrium. The term applies equally to acts in which the performer balances on a piece of equipment or a prop, and acts in which the performer balances a prop on a part of their body. A comparative term object manipulation is used to describe other circus skills where props are thrown, rolled or in some way moved by or over various parts of the human body.

A variety of different skills can be described as equilibristics.

Some well-known examples of equilibristics are unicycle riding, stilt walking, tightrope walking, and some types of acrobatics. Some tricks within the category of object manipulation are equilibristic tricks. Object manipulation skills which use equilibristic tricks include juggling, devil sticks, plate spinning, antipodism or Risley and contact juggling.
