Envato is an Australia-based, privately held company that specializes in the start-up, promotion and operation of multiple online marketplaces which facilitate the exchange of digital goods from thousands of independent sellers and digital authors to both amateur and professional web-designers, creative agencies and operators of web properties. Envato was founded in 2006 by Collis Ta'eed, Cyan Ta'eed, and Jun Rung under a motto of "helping people learn and earn online." [1]

History

After co-founding the company in 2006 the group launched FlashDen, the first digital marketplace which focused on rich multimedia web content exclusively produced by use of the Adobe Flash platform.[2] After a complaint from Adobe, which holds the rights to the Flash trademark, FlashDen became known as ActiveDen.[3] Later that year, Envato launched Videohive, focusing on stock videos and After Effects templates.

Collis Ta'eed has been credited with positioning Envato to rapidly meet consumer demand by having an uncanny ability to successfully forecast and capitalize on the latest trends in the global digital markets by launching various niche markets, education portals, and web properties to meet consumer demand in record development time.

Envato's third marketplace ThemeForest launched in 2008 [4] and specializes in WordPress themes of which it has over a thousand,[5] but it also features Magento Themes. Themeforest's top selling digital author for the third straight year has been Kriesi, an Austria based Wordpress theme designer with over $2,000,000 in total sales as of February, 2013.[6]

In 2011 Envato launched its royalty free stock photo marketplace - PhotoDune. Despite only publicly launching in August 2011, the size of PhotoDune's file library has already surpassed any other Envato marketplace to date.[7]

On September 12, 2011, Envato's Marketplaces surpassed the 1 million member mark. To commemorate the occasion they put together a Million Members Infographic that detailed their growth throughout the years.

In early 2013, Envato launched Microlancer, a digital marketplace for freelance services.[8]

A running list of major events around Envato can be seen on their website. [9]
