Enez is a district of Edirne Province, Turkey, as well as the name of the center-town of the district. Its ancient and medieval name was Aenus or Ainos (Greek: Αίνος). The mayor is Ahmet Çayır (DSP). The population is 3,826 as of 2010.
Enez is the site of the Battle of Levounion, in which the Byzantines and their Cuman allies crushed the Pechenegs in 1091 AD.
In 1355 Enez became a possession of the Genoese Gattilusi family, who held it as vassals of the Byzantine Empire. In 1456 the town was taken by the Turkish Sultan Mehmed II.
The town of Enez is located on the southern shore of the river Meriç, where its estuary broadens to meet the Aegean Sea in the Gulf of Saros. Enez occupies a ridge of rock surrounded by broad marshes. Its festivals and clear beaches make it famous.
