Emre Can (Turkish pronunciation: [ˈɛmrɛ ˈd͡ʒɑn], born 12 January 1994) is a German-Turkish footballer who plays as a midfielder for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Club career

Can had mainly played as a midfielder for Bayern Munich II in the Regionalliga Bayern. He made his debut for Bayern's first team in the 2012 DFL-Supercup and his Bundesliga debut against 1. FC Nürnberg on 13 April 2013.

On 2 August 2013, Can agreed to a four-year deal with Bayer Leverkusen which included a buy-back clause for Bayern Munich.[2] Karl-Heinz Rummenigge pointed out Bayern's past successes in loaning out young players for purposes of gaining experience.

International career

Youth football teams

Can received call-ups for the German U15, U16 and U17 youth football teams. In the FIFA U-17 World Cup, Can captained the German squad that won third place, they won six out of seven games and were beaten only by tournament winner and host Mexico by 2–3. In that semifinal match, Can scored his only goal of the tournament: he started a solo dribble in the centre of the pitch, ran past three Mexican players and netted the 2–1 for Germany. He was given the nickname "Skipper" by national youth coach Steffen Freund.[3]

Because of his Turkish ancestry Can would also be eligible to play for the Turkey national football team, but he stated he "likes playing for Germany very much, and wants to make it in the DFB".[4][5][6]
