Founded in 1971 — with the purpose of supplying the Brazilian refrigeration industry which, up until then, relied entirely on imported compressors — Embraco began production in 1974. It was in this same decade when it began to export to markets in the Americas.
In the 1980s, the sales and distribution structure reached over 80 countries. Anticipating a globalized economy, the company decided to set up production bases overseas and soon became world leader; today it holds a 25% market share.
Embraco employs approximately 10,000 people worldwide. The firm invests heavily in product design and manufacturing innovation, and has gained recognition as a reputable supplier. Embraco supplies large international household refrigeration OEMs as well as the biggest manufacturers of commercial refrigeration equipment.
Its headquarters and main factory is in Joinville, Santa Catarina, in the southern region of Brazil.[1] Embraco also has factories in Italy, Slovakia, and China, as well as a business office in the United States. Embraco produces hermetic compressors, condensing units and sealed units, for domestic and commercial use.
In 2011, Embraco North America was fined by the United States Justice Department for $91.8 million for price-fixing in the market for compressors.[2]
