Elousa is a genus of moths formerly of the Noctuidae family. The Noctuidae family of moths are mostly classified in the family Erebidae now, along with all of the former members of the families Arctiidae and Lymantriidae.[1] Initially 'Elousa' was classified in the Noctuidae family under the subfamily Catocalinae in the tribe Catocalini and subtribe Ophiusina. The Ophiusina do not seem to be very closely related to the Noctuinae – the core group of owlet moths – and in an alternate classification scheme, the Noctuidae are reduced in extent, and the present group is placed in a separate noctuoid family Erebidae and upranked to full tribe Ophiusini within the Catocalinae subfamily (sometimes called Erebinae in this case). This re-classification has not yet met with general consensus, and many resources and publications still follow the older classification scheme (e.g.[2])
