Elizabeth Railway Station is a railway station on the Gawler railway line on the border of the northern Adelaide suburbs of Elizabeth and Edinburgh. It is located 25.8 km by railway from the Adelaide Railway Station. Elizabeth is one of the busiest stations in Adelaide.[citation needed] Since 27 April 2008, all passenger carrying Gawler line trains stop at the station, including peak hour express services.
The station opened in 1960 and had the same facilities as Cheltenham, Broadmeadows and Womma stations. These were demolished in 1998 and redeveloped in 1999.
The redeveloped station had one central platform that was accessible by an underground pedestrian subway. It had a long roof between 40–50 metres in length to protect patrons from the weather. There was a staffed ticket office, open only during the morning and around lunch time on weekdays. There were no public toilets. The station had a rail real time information board and an emergency phone on the platform. It was designated a "Safer Station" and had enhanced lighting, CCTV surveillance and security help phones provided.
In 2011-12 the station was completely rebuilt with two side platforms, the track re-aligned, and other changes made in preparation for the planned electrification of the Gawler line in late 2013. As some peak-hour services will then start / terminate at Elizabeth, the rebuild has included the addition of a siding just north of the station to allow short term storage of such trains, and there have been additions to the tracks to enable the reversing of trains. The western platform is accessed both by a level crossing and an overpass.
Redevelopment 2011-2012
In 2010, the South Australian Government announced that the station will undergo a $15 million upgrade to start in September 2011.[citation needed] The upgrade is a part of the state government's $2 billion investment into public transport over 10 years. The redevelopment plans to transform the station into an interchange similar to that of Mawson Interchange.
The upgraded station reopened on 31 March 2012, with some minor works still ongoing.[1]
