The Elitserien (Literally, Elite League) is the highest category in the league system of Swedish women's handball. Its inaugural edition took place in 1951.

Currently twelve teams take part in the competition. The eight top teams go on to the championship play-offs, comprising two five-games rounds and a single-match final. The champion gets a spot in the Champions League's 2nd qualifying stage.[1] On the other hand, the two bottom teams are relegated while the 9th and 10th ones play a promotion against Allsvenskan's 3rd and 4th to defend their spot in the category.

Kvinnliga IK and Stockholmspolisens IF were historical dominators of the competition with 14 (1951–72) and 12 (1974–90) championships respectively,[2] while IK Sävehof is the most successful team in recent years with five titles since 2006, including the three last editions. The 2011-12 edition is being contested by Eslövs IK, BK Heid, H65 Höör, HF Kroppskultur, Lugi HF, H43/Lundagård, Örebro SK, Sävehof, Skövde HF, Skuru IK, Spårvägens HF and IVH Västerås.[3]
