Elena Tairova

Elena Tairova (August 28, 1991 – March 16, 2010) was a Belraussian and Russian chess player, Woman Grandmaster and International Master.

Chess career

In 2006, at the age of fourteen, Elena became a WGM, and a full IM. She won a succession of European and World girls’ junior titles, and was the Russian women’s under-20 champion. That same year, she was runner-up in the Russian women’s superfinal.

In 2007, she participated in the Russia vs China match and tied for first at the Russian Superfinal 2007, beating Nadezhda Kosintseva, among others.

Illness and death

In early 2008, Elena became ill and missed several tournaments. She later recovered, and returned to tournament successes. However, in December 2009, she fell ill again, and was unable to take her place in the latest Russian women’s superfinal.

On March 16, 2010, Elena died from this chronic undisclosed illness at the age of 18.
