The last regional election took place on 15-16 February 2009. Ugo Cappellacci, the centre-right candidate, defeated Renato Soru, the centre-left incumbent President, by a large margin.

On 8 May 2005 provincial elections took place in all the Provinces of Sardinia, comprising the newly formed ones. The election saw a big victory for the centre-left, which won seven provinces out of eight.
