El Cuero is a Norwegian rock group formed in 2005 in Kristiansund. As of March 2013, they have released four studio albums. Their most recent album, Victor's Justice, was released on March 8, 2013.
History
Formation (2005-2007)
The band was formed by brothers Håvard and Brynjar Takle-Ohr in their hometown of Kristiansund in 2005. The brothers had prior to El Cuero played in several bands together, but were nearly estranged in the years prior to 2005, as they "grew tired of each other".[1] Two of their friends and fellow musicians, Øyvind Blomstrøm and Tommy Reite, completed the line-up soon after. Initially starting out as an indie rock band, touring the country for two years, playing mostly festivals, pubs and minor events; the band entered the studio to record their eponymous debut album in 2007. Released to very positive reviews by the Norwegian media,[2][3] the band soon became a highly demanded live attraction all over the country.[4]
A Glimmer of Hope and From Mountains to Sand (2008-2012)
Less than a year after their first album, the band returned to the studio to record their follow-up album in 2008, following a highly successful tour to support their first album. Released the same year, their second album "A Glimmer of Hope", the band's major label debut, was met with universal praise,[5][6][7][8] and the band soon embarked on an extensive tour to support the album, performing shows and festivals to rave reviews from both critics and fellow artists. Jackson Browne singled them out for praise while touring in Norway: "I was really impressed by El Cuero earlier today, I didn't expect Norwegians to have such a groove."[9][10]
In the fall of 2010, the band announced on their official Facebook page that they were entering the studio to record their third album for a 2011 release.[11] On March 8, 2011, the band announced that the album would be titled From Mountains to Sand, and that a May 27 release date had been set, with the first single from the album titled "Footprints" to be released ten days later. The music video for the single was released on YouTube the same day.[9][12][13] The album was released on schedule, and entered both the Norwegian iTunes album chart and national album charts at number one. During 2011-12 the band toured Scandinavia in promotion of their new album, once again harvesting rave reviews.
Victor's Justice and first live album (2012 - )
In the fall of 2012, the band once again returned to the studio, and in September announced that twelve songs had been recorded for the album, with plans for an early 2013 release. The entire album was written and recorded in a three-week jam session, after the band locked themselves in an old, abandoned school building, to avoid distractions during the recording process.[14] On November 28, the album's first single, "My Dark America" was released on the band's YouTube channel, along with news that the album would be released on February 8, 2013.[15] In January 2013, the band revealed that the album had been pushed back to March 1, 2013 due to delays in the production of the album artwork. They also confirmed that the album would be released on CD, LP and digitally, like their previous release, while announcing a much awaited vinyl release of their first album. On January 28, 2013 the band confirmed that the album would be titled Victor's Justice. The artwork and track listing was revealed in February, before the album was released on March 8, 2013, once again to overwhelmingly positive reviews.[16] Following a four-month tour to support the album during spring and summer 2013, it was announced by the band on October 1 that they had finished production of their first live album, El Cuero's Justice - Live!, to be released on October 11, 2013. The announcement came less than a day after the band posted on their Facebook page that they had "great news coming tomorrow".
Discography
The band has released four albums and two singles as of March 2013, with their most recent album released on March 8, 2013. Their first album was released on CD, while their second album was released on both CD and vinyl LP. Their third album was released on CD, vinyl LP and via iTunes,[11] marking the band's first digital album release. Their first single, "Footprints", was released exclusively on iTunes and on Platekompaniet's MP3 store on March 18, 2011.[12] Two days later, their two first albums were re-released on iTunes as well. Their fourth studio album, "Victors Justice", was released on CD, digital and vinyl on March 8, 2013.
