Eileen Fisher is an American clothing designer and founder of the American women's clothing retailer, Eileen Fisher, Inc. Her clothing is known for simplicity. The company has sometimes used non-traditional models in print advertisements, including its own employees.

Biography

Fisher grew up in Des Plaines, Illinois, attended the University of Illinois, and moved to New York City in 1973.[1][2] She worked as an interior designer and as a graphic artist before establishing her own business. She has two children, Zack and Sasha, and lives in Irvington, New York.[3]

Eileen Fisher Inc. is an American privately held company founded by Fisher in 1984 with just US$350.[4] Her first order at a New York clothing design show was for $3,000, which was followed three months later with $40,000 in additional sales.[4] She opened her first retail store in 1991.[1]

In 2002, the company earned $144 million in revenue and in 2003 $154 million.[5][4] As of 2003, 35 percent of the company's clothing was manufactured in the United States while the rest was made in China in compliance with Social Accountability International's SA8000.[5]

The company has over 800 employees, consists of over 56 retail stores, and operates in fifteen states.[2] In 2011, the company expanded outside the U.S., opening its first Canadian store in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was due to open two stores in London, England, in October 2012.[1]

The Eileen Fisher company holds sustainability at a high importance. 70% of the cotton used in the companies clothing comes from Organic Cotton. This allows the soil to be reused and keeps workers from being exposed to the harsh chemicals in pesticides. In order to also reduce the amount of fabric and fiber that is wasted yearly, the company started a recycle program called Green Eileen, which allows customers to donate their gently used Eileen Fisher Clothing in return for a $5 gift certicicate for each piece. The clothing is then dry cleaned and resold and 100% of the money earned through the Green Eileen Program is put towards Business Grants for women, and Supporting leadership in young women. [6][7]
