Edgar Çani (born 22 July 1989 in Tirana)[2] is an Albanian football centre forward who plays for A.S. Bari in the Italian Serie B on loan from Catania. He also represents the Albania national football team.

Career

Early career

Çani was born in Albania but grew up in Città della Pieve, Province of Perugia, Italy. Çani was first noted by a Pescara scout in 2004, and then signed by the biancazzurri.[3]

Palermo & loans on Serie B teams

After playing the first half of the 2007–08 season with Pescara in Serie C1, on 31 January 2008 Palermo confirmed to have signed him from Pescara.[4] along with Luca Di Matteo for €600,000 and €500,000 respectively. In June 2008 Pescara made a discount for both players, which was sold for €450,000 each.[5]

Çani made his Serie A debut on 27 April 2008 in a 0–0 home tie against Atalanta.[6]

On July 2008, Ascoli confirmed to have signed Çani on loan from Palermo for the 2008–09 Serie B season.[7]

On 20 August 2009 he was loaned out to another Serie B team, Padova.[8] He left Padova in January 2010 to be loaned out to Piacenza, another Serie B team.[9] He made his debut with Piacenza by scoring two goals in a 3–1 win at Triestina's home.

After his loan move to Piacenza expired at the end of the season, he was sent out on loan again to Modena, another Serie B club, on July 2010.[10]

Polonia Warsaw

The following year he moved to Polonia Warsaw outright.[11][12] In Polonia Warsaw, Çani got into a conflict with the club's owner as well as the coach and the team. Already in January 2012 he began to look for a potential new employer, but in the end decided to sign a new 3-year contract with Polonia.[13] In the Summer of 2012, for three months he refused to return to Poland after holidays in Italy and missed the team's training camps. After returning, he played irregularly, until he insulted the coach and was moved to the youth academy team. His recently announced move to Catania is considered controversial, as he is still technically a Polonia Warsaw player until 2015.[14]

Catania and loans to Carpi and Bari

On 22 January 2013 Edgar Çani signed for Catania Calcio in Serie A. He made his debut in 3 March 2013 against Inter, Catania lost against Inter 2–3.

He was sent out on loan to Carpi F.C. in the Serie B on 23 July 2013.[15] He meet another fellow Albanian player Ledian Memushaj, also on loan from Lecce. He made his debut in 11 August 2013 against Reggina, match valid for Coppa Italia - 2nd round, finished on loss 1-0.[16] League debut came on 24 August 2013 against Ternana, finished on 1-0 loss.[17] Çani scored his first goal in 21 September 2013 in match against Cesena finished on 4-1 loss, he came as a substitute on 77th minute in place of Alessandro Sgrigna and on 87th minute scored a goal.[18]

In January 2014 he was loaned to A.S. Bari until 30 June 2014.[19] He made his debut on 1 February 2014 against Brescia coming as a substitude on 84th minute in place of Stefano Sabelli, match finished on loss 2-1.[20]

International career

In February 2011 Çani expressed to the Albanian media that it is his dream to be part of the Albania national football team.[21] The dream came true a year later, as he was called up for the match against Georgia on 29 February 2012. His debut brought his first international goal as well. In the first match of the qualifiers of the 2014 World Cup a 3–1 win against Cyprus Çani came in as a substitute and scored a winner goal in the 84th minute.[22]
