Eastwood Academy

Eastwood Academy is a secondary school in the Eastwood neighborhood of the East End, Houston, Texas, United States. The school is a member of the Houston Independent School District.

Eastwood Academy is a school-of-choice for residents in the city of Houston.

Eastwood Academy has been an "exemplary" high school since 2008, and is rated by the Texas Education Agency.^[1]

Eastwood was nominated as a Blue Ribbon School in 2010 and received the award, officially, in 2011.

Eastwood Academy's city, state, and national rankings are as follows: they are ranked number 3 in the Greater Houston area by Children at Risk; number 11 out of 1,145 high schools in the State of Texas, also by Children at Risk; number 72 in the nation by The Daily Beast (Newsweek); number 14 in Texas and number 121 in the nation by US News and World Report; and number 2 in the city of Houston, number 6 in Texas, and number 23 in the Nation by The Washington Post.

History

Eastwood was built in 1954 as a Baptist Church before the Houston Independent School District bought the property and admitted the school as an internal charter in 2001. The 22,000-square-foot (2,000 m²) building was renovated and expanded for "re-adaptive" use for 175 students. The renovation included administrative offices, library, cafeteria, classrooms, science laboratories, computer laboratories and a multi-purpose room with a stage. The school was originally supposed to be a 9th grade school and feeder to the nearby Austin High School. After some consideration, the founders decided that the school would serve as a small-school alternative to Austin HS, Milby HS, and Chavez HS.^{[citation needed]}

Since then Eastwood Academy has admitted students from all around the Houston area; the majority enrolled are from nearby schools, some of which include Jackson Middle School, Edison Middle School, and Project Chrysalis Middle School, but others include Rice Middle, Lanier Vanguard, and TH Rogers Middle. Project Chrysalis Middle School makes up 38% of the class of 2016. Students are required to apply since it is a charter school and are admitted based on their grade point averages, standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, and interviews (which are conducted by the faculty and administration.)^{[citation needed]}

Eastwood Campus Expands

The Eastwood Academy campus expanded when HISD purchased the property fronting on Dumble and across from the neighboring Jack in the Box restaurant in Spring 2007. Eastwood is currently under construction for a new wing, new parking, new soccer and rugby fields, and park.

Academics

Eastwood Academy offers Advanced Placement courses and Dual-Credit courses (through Houston Community College.) Advanced Placement courses offered are: Statistics, Calculus AB and BC, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, Human Geography, World History, US History, European History, Art History, Studio Art, Computer Science, and US Government. Dual Credit courses include: English 1301 and 1302, Psychology 2301, Sociology 2301, Economics 2301, and Government 2301.

Eastwood has a Science and Research Design team (rocketry), award-winning Robotics team, and award-winning Debate squad (policy debate and public forum styles). Eastwood also has Mu Alpha Theta (Math club.) Other extracurricular activities include The Woods Project, Exercise Club, GEMS (Girl's Empowerment Movement Society), Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), Student Leadership, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, National Forensic League , Student Council, Houston Urban Debate League , Texas Forensic Association , Film Club, Theatre, YAAP (Young Artist's Apprenticeship Program, ACE Mentorship Program (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering), Youth About Business (YAB), and Skills USA. Furthermore, juniors and seniors have the opportunity to raise funds to travel in Europe during Spring Break.

Graduation and College Acceptance

Eastwood Academy has averaged, over the past seven years, a 99.7% graduation rate. In some cases juniors (11th graders) are able to graduate early because they have completed the required coursework earlier than their peers (3-5% of students each year). 100% of each graduating class has been accepted to college since 2007.

Austin University, University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas A&M Galveston, Houston Baptist University, Texas Southern University, University of Saint Thomas, Our Lady of the Lake University, St. John's University, University Of Alaska, the University of Houston, and the University of Houston–Downtown.

Athletics

Eastwood Academy is a small school which impedes it from participating in High School sports through HISD. Students may participate in sports through Eastwood's affiliation with Austin High School. Eastwood Academy also participates in sports through local leagues in Houston parks.
