Eastside Catholic School is a private Catholic secondary school located in Sammamish, Washington, a suburb east of Seattle. It has a faith-based educational program for students in grades 6 through 12 that emphasizes intellectual excellence, nurturing of relationships, and living a life of leadership and service to others. Founded by parents in 1980, the school is governed by an elected board of trustees. It is the only seven-year, co-educational Catholic school on the Eastside, and offers a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum. It is located in the Archdiocese of Seattle and is accredited by the state of Washington, the Northwest Association of Independent Schools and the Northwest Association of Schools. It is also a member of the National Catholic Education Association. The school has approximately 935 students in grades 6–12 and employs 120 faculty members and four counselors.[5]

History

The idea for Eastside Catholic originated in 1974 and the new school opened its doors in 1980 in downtown Bellevue.

For the first nine years, the campus was south of the Bellevue Square mall, at the former Bellevue Junior High School (old Bellevue High), now the Downtown Park.[10]

The next campus was also rented from the Bellevue School District at the former Ringdall Junior High (1970–87) at 11650 SE 60th Street in Newport Hills. Eastside Catholic was located at that campus for nineteen years, from 1989 to June 2008.

In August 2008 Eastside Catholic opened a new $42 million campus in the city of Sammamish. The school also included an expansion to include grades 6–8.[1]

The school made headlines when the resignation of vice-principal Mark Zmuda was announced in December 2013.[11] Media reports said he was asked to resign because of his same-sex marriage in July 2013. Over 400 students conducted a sit-in protest in his support with teachers giving their consent as well.[12] The school stated in a letter to parents that "Mark's same-sex marriage over the summer violated his employment contract with the school" and that they had been "directed to comply with the teachings of the church".[13] In response to the student's protest, the school administration stated that students would be sent home for any additional campus protests.[14] This failed to quell the controversy, and on January 22, 2014, the president of the school resigned.[3] The school board of trustees accepted her resignation, saying that "For Sister Mary it was a difficult but necessary decision so that a new leader can be brought in to ensure the entire Eastside Catholic community is on a positive path forward."[3]

Curriculum

Academic Philosophy

Eastside Catholic has a 6th through 12th-grade academic program with a coordinated bell schedule between its high school and middle school. The common schedule offers opportunities for collaboration across grade levels. The schedule allows the high school and middle school faculties to meet periodically in their academic departments to plan their program of study. Middle school students who are advanced learners can take high school courses.[15]

The school encourages students to participate in its cross-grade connections activities, including common prayer and liturgy, student assemblies and mentoring projects. The school emphasizes the establishment of a firm academic foundation in preparation for a rigorous college curriculum as well as faith and ethics.

Middle School Core Subjects

Middle school core subjects include arts, health and fitness/physical education, humanities/language arts/social studies, math, music, religion, science and world language.

High School Credit for Courses Taken in Middle School

For courses taken in schools other than Eastside Catholic Middle School: Although some middle schools offer courses designated "for high school credit", the earning of those credits does not lessen the number of departmental or overall credits that must be earned in grades nine through 12. However, students with such early credits may begin their high school course work at a more advanced level. Students may provide Eastside Catholic counselors with a copy of their transcripts reflecting these courses so they may be attached to their official Eastside Catholic transcript and included in their college applications.

High School Courses Taken at Eastside Catholic Middle School

Middle school students may be permitted to enroll in high school courses with approval by the administration. These courses will fulfill middle school requirements. Successful completion of high school courses taken during middle school does not lessen the number of departmental or overall credits that must be earned in grades nine through 12; however, students with such early credits may begin their high school course work at a more advanced level. These courses will earn high school credit which will be posted to their Eastside Catholic High School transcript.

Campus

Eastside Catholic's state-of-the-art campus is surrounded by forests and wetlands. The 50-acre campus provides an environment for science exploration and observation and the facilities were designed to create an optimum environment for learning and include science labs, integrated classroom technology and dedicated gathering areas for student collaboration. The campus is also home to the St. Francis of Assisi chapel, a 12,000-volume library, two gymnasiums, a lighted 2,000-seat stadium and a multi-purpose turf field.

In recognition of superior energy performance, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded Eastside Catholic School ENERGY STAR certification for 2012. Buildings that earn EPA's ENERGY STAR use 35 percent less energy and generate 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than similar buildings across the nation.[16]

DECA

Eastside Catholic is one of only three private schools in the state to offer a DECA program. DECA is a student leadership organization. The goal of DECA is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. In 2012 two EC students won the International Chapter Awards competing against students from 88 countries.

Speech and Debate

The speech and debate team at Eastside Catholic competes on an elite level in a wide variety of debate and public speaking events. Debaters learn to think deeply and critically about a wide range of political, ethical and economic subjects while honing their presentation skills. Speech and debate is open to all ECHS students and to eighth-graders.

Mock Trial

Students in Mock Trial do the authentic work of professionals who litigate in the court of law each day. Students read the mock trail case and then write scripts (e.g., direct examination, cross examination, closing arguments). This class is designed to provide a student with a historical understanding of the legal system.

Students participate in the YMCA Washington State Mock Trial Program and have won awards in the past. In 2007, Eastside Catholic won the Snohomish County District Competition, placed fourth at the Washington State Competition and also placed fourth at the American Mock Trial Invitational.

Athletics

At Eastside Catholic, 20 athletic teams[17] compete in the Metro League in WIAA Class 3A. The Eastside Catholic athletics mascot is the Crusader and the school colors are orange and navy blue. Approximately 80 percent of students participate in at least one sport per year. Eastside Catholic athletes have distinguished themselves both on and off the playing fields, earning all-metro, all-league and all-academic honors. Many Eastside Catholic athletes go on to play at the collegiate level.

During the 2012-13 school year the football and volleyball teams had the highest cumulative GPA in the state and each won a WIAA Academic State Championship.

Middle School Sports

The middle school participates in sports with the Archdiocese of Seattle's Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). The sports offered by the middle school through CYO are soccer, cross country, basketball, volleyball and track.[18]
