East Kolkata refers to the eastern areas of the city of Kolkata, India. It includes the localities of Salt Lake City, New Town, VIP Nagar, Metropolitan Township, East Calcutta Township, Ajaynagar, Santoshpur, Mukundapur and certain parts of Garia like Baishnabghata-Patuli Township, Chak Garia and New Garia. The northern part of East Kolkata is dominated by the townships of Salt Lake City and New Town. The region is characterized by salt lakes and well planned residential blocks. This part of the city is divided into regular blocks and houses most of the attractions in the region.

Transport

The main road transport artery is the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass which runs from north end of the city to Garia in the south. The Metro Railway runs through the southern part of East Kolkata with stations at Baishnabghata-Patuli and New Garia.

Townships

East Kolkata has five major townships which constitute the bulk of the region. These are as follows :

IT Hub-Sector V

The Information Technology hub is the centre of some of the notable IT/ITES Indian and multinational companies. Around 1.2 Lakh people are employed in Sector V, Salt Lake City. The area is administered by Naba Diganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA).
