ERT HD (Greek: ΕΡΤ HD) was a high-definition television channel by ERT, the former public broadcaster of Greece. It was the first high-definition television channel in Greece and started broadcasting on 27 April 2011 in several large cities such as Athens, Thessaloniki and Alexandroupoli.[1] ERT HD broadcast such important international events as the Olympic Games, the UEFA European Championship, the UEFA Champions League, the Eurovision Song Contest, the Euroleague and the French Open. It was broadcast in DVB-T/MPEG-4 format, at 1080i resolution.
All these programs were also broadcast by ERT's standard-definition (576i) channels.
Lawsuit
The private Greek television channel Skai filed a lawsuit against ERT in 2011 for what it claimed was an illegal monopoly on high-definition programming by the public broadcaster. In its lawsuit, Skai claimed that ERT was in violation of European Union regulations regarding competition.[2]
