Although widely known as a Detroit-based law firm, Dykema was actually founded in 1897 in Chicago.[1] The firm has offices in various locations around the United States including Detroit, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis (opened in January 2013) and Washington, D.C. It currently employs more than 350 lawyers and lobbying professionals.[2] Dykema's largest office is in Chicago but its combined southeastern Michigan offices are collectively larger.
The firm is one of the largest Midwest-based United States law firms,[3] and is the 130th largest firm in the United States.[4] The firm's website indicates that it represents "individuals, publicly held companies, hundreds of privately held corporations, limited and general partnerships, associations, hospitals and managed care networks, banks and financial institutions, and retailers."[3] Among other areas, Dykema has one of the larger automotive-related law firm practices in the United States.[3] The firm represents Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota, and Volvo.[3]
Also substantial is Dykema’s banking and consumer financial services practice. For example, thirty percent of the firm's reported litigation cases over the last two years have involved banking issues,[5] and two of its financial services lawyers receive the highest nationwide ratings from Chambers USA as acknowledged leaders in this area.[3] According to the firm, it "provides counseling and litigation representation to financial institutions, including banks, savings and loan associations, finance companies, credit card issuers, mortgage bankers, vendors and retailers."[3] Dykema is also Michigan editor to the consumer financial services online publications HouseLaw and CarLaw.[3]
In January 2013, the firm expanded into Minneapolis, Minnesota.[6]
