Durgi
Durgi is a village and mandal in the Palnadu region of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh state of southern India. It is also used as a last name for few Brahmins in Andhra Pradesh.
Attraction
Durgi stone craft originated here in the 15th century.[1] At that time sculptors preferred soft limestone to the more expensive granite to carve idols.
Today commercial demand for the stone carvings has resulted in the sculptors creating more simple, utilitarian designs than in times past. Craftsmen sell items such as paperweights and lampshades to individuals and dealers.
This village can be called a ‘Temple Village’, as there are a good number of temples such as Sri Venu Gopala Swamy temple(constructed around 100 years back), Shivalayam (which was constructed very long back), Sri Durga Devi temple, Hanuman Temple, Sri Ayyappa Swami temple and Sri Veera Brahmendra Swami temple. In this mandal there are very good historical Places like … Sri Subbayya Thatha temple and Sri Nidanampadu Ammavari temple.[2]
