Dunellen High School (DHS) is a four-year comprehensive public high school that serves students in ninth through twelfth grades from Dunellen in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States, operating as part of the Dunellen Public Schools.

As of the 2010-11 school year, the school had an enrollment of 300 students and 17.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 17.65:1, listing it as the smallest high school in the state. There were 70 students (23.3% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 35 (11.7% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.[1]

Awards, recognition and rankings

The school was the 112th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 328 schools statewide in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2012 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools", after being ranked 110th in 2010 out of 322 schools listed.[2] The magazine ranked the school 166th in its 2008 rankings out of 316 schools statewide. The school was ranked 147th in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which surveyed 316 schools across the state.[3] Schooldigger.com ranked the school 147th out of 381 public high schools statewide in its 2011 rankings (an increase of 92 positions from the 2010 ranking) which were based on the combined percentage of students classified as proficient or above proficient on the mathematics (85.7%) and language arts literacy (92.2%) components of the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA).[4]

Extracurricular activities

Dunellen has a wide variety of other activities to choose from. Students are offered to be a part of Biology Club, Chess Club, Chess Team, Choir, Concert Band, Marching Band, National Art Honor Society, National Honor Society, Drama Club, Exodus, French Club, Spanish Club, Jazz Band, Madrigals, Math League, Thespian Society and The Spectrum.

Athletics

The Dunellen High School Destroyers compete in the Greater Middlesex Conference, made up of public and private high schools located in the greater Middlesex County area, operating under the supervision of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).[5] Dunellen is placed in the Gold Division for football.

The football team won the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I state sectional championship in 1993. In 2010, the football team lost to Shore Regional High School in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I state sectional championship at Rutgers Stadium in New Brunswick.[6]

Boys' wrestling operates on a cooperative basis with Middlesex High School, with Middlesex as the host school, and Dunellen’s athletes traveling to participate with the Middlesex-based teams.[7]
