Drey Jermaine Wright (born 30 April 1995) is an English footballer who plays as a forward for Colchester United.

Career

Wright, son of former Ipswich Town and Southampton midfielder Jermaine Wright,[3] is a rapid winger who was given a professional contract after just one year in the Colchester United youth team, having scored a number of goals in the 2011–12 season.[4] Born in Greenwich, London, he was offered a two-year contract, alongside three other youth team players.[5]

Wright featured heavily for Colchester's first team in pre-season for the 2012–13 season, and made his first team debut in a League Cup 3–0 defeat against Yeovil Town on 14 August 2012.[6][7] He made his first league appearance for Colchester in a 2–2 draw with Portsmouth on 21 August 2012, coming on as a 79th minute substitute for Clinton Morrison.[8] His first goal for the club came in a 3–1 defeat to Brentford on 26 December 2012.[9]

In March 2013, Wright was nominated as League One 'Apprentice of the Year', making the shortlist alongside Hartlepool United's Luke James and Sheffield United's George Willis, ending as runner-up to James.[10]

Wright scored his second professional goal for Colchester on 1 April 2013, scoring the opener in a 1–1 draw with Oldham Athletic following an error from Latics goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis.[11] He then scored in the following game against Leyton Orient in a vital 2–1 win.[12]

At the end of his first season in the first-team, Wright was named Colchester United 'Young Player of the Year' after making 21 league appearances and scoring three goals in the process.[13] He was rewarded with a new three-year contract on 26 July 2013 to keep him with Colchester until summer 2016.[14]

Wright featured in the opening game of the 2013–14 season when he came on as a substitute for Freddie Sears after 78 minutes during a 1–0 victory over Gillingham on 3 August.[15] He made his first start of the season in a 2–0 defeat to Coventry City on 8 September.[16] Having undergone a knee operation in October 2013, Wright returned to light training with the squad in February 2014 having not featured since 14 September 2013 in a 2–2 draw with Bradford City.[17]
