Dream Cruise is the thirteenth and final episode of the second season (and of the whole TV series) of Masters of Horror, directed by Norio Tsuruta.

Plot

Jack Miller (Daniel Gillies), an American lawyer working in Tokyo, has fallen in love with Yuri (Yoshino Kimura), the wife of his most valued client, Eiji (Ryo Ishibashi). Despite Jack's deep-rooted fear of the sea, he reluctantly accepts Eiji's invitation to join the couple for a day trip on the Tokyo Bay. On the trip, it is revealed that Eiji killed his first wife, an emotionally unstable rich woman, to marry Yuri. After some engine trouble, Eiji goes to inspect it and seems to drown. Yuri wants to leave him there, assuming he's dead. Jack, however, wants to try to save him and is appalled that Yuri doesn't want to help. Suddenly, Eiji reappears, soaked and alive. Things become strange when they can't seem to get hold of any of the other boats in the area, despite being in range.

Eiji tries to kill Yuri and Yuri and Jack realize that Eiji's possessed by the vengeful spirit of Eiji's first wife, who blames Yuri for her death. Eiji eventually knocks Jack out and hides Yuri in the bathroom. Jack is forced to fight a possessed Eiji and defeats him by stabbing him. Eiji falls apart and drifts into the sea. Jack hears Yuri crying out for help, but is stopped by Eiji's severed arm. As he struggles with the arm, the bathroom of the boat begins to fill with water. Yuri can see what happened to Eiji's first wife: she confronted Eiji about his feelings for Yuri. He told his wife that he never once loved her, but that he did love Yuri. His wife refused to let him divorce her or take her money. Eiji killed her and dumped her body in the exact place he had stopped their boat. Just as Jack gets Yuri out of the bathroom, she reveals that Eiji's wife's name was Naomi, along with the truth of what happened. Yuri is left hysterical, saying that the spot is cursed and if they stay, they'd be cursed and die.

However, they can't contact other boats because the radio has been destroyed. Yuri is suddenly possessed by Naomi, who uses Yuri to try to harm Jack. Jack uses a pickax to keep Yuri at bay. He sees his dead brother Sean's spirit and Yuri is freed from Naomi's influence. The two hide to escape her. Yuri decides she will sacrifice herself to Naomi to spare Jack but Jack talks her out of it. After being chased by Naomi, Yuri convinces Jack to fight his fear and swim away from the boat. They swim as far as they can. As Naomi disappears, Yuri believes they've escaped.

The two embrace in relief, but Naomi reappears, trying to drag Yuri underwater. Though Jack tries to save her, he knows he can't fight Naomi. Sean (Ethan Amis) reappears and pulls the vengeful Naomi down to the bottom of the sea. Jack sees his brother's hat and decides to take it with him. The story ends with Jack now married to Yuri, finally letting go of his past.

Details

Dream Cruise was filmed in Japan with a Japanese crew and mostly Japanese cast. It was filmed as a full length 90 minute movie that was shortened to 60 minutes for its airing on Showtime. For its DVD release, it is restored to its full running time though the DVD box erroneously states it remains at 60 minutes.

In addition, it is now streaming on Netflix (although this may change at anytime). The length of the streaming version is the same as the original 60 minute aired version.
