The Stadtbahn Dortmund is a light rail system in the German city of Dortmund and is integrated in the Rhine-Ruhr Stadtbahn network. Its network consists of eight lines[1] which pass the city centre in underground tunnels and belongs to the VRR transport union. Opened 1984, it consecutively replaced the tram lines that were operating on the surface. The Dortmund Stadtbahn operates on 75.0 kilometres (46.6 mi) of route (of which 20.5 kilometres (12.7 mi) are underground in tunnels, with the other 54.5 kilometres (33.9 mi) being above-ground in dedicated rights-of-way),[3] serving 125 stations (24 of which underground).[2]
Network
The railway network is separated into three 'cardinal tracks' (Stammstrecken): The Stammstrecke I, which is home to the U41, U45, U47 and U49 lines, connects stations on a north-south-axis between the Leopoldstraße and Markgrafenstraße stations (including the main station). Lines U42 and U46 operate on the Stammstrecke II between Brunnenstraße and Stadtgarten and offer connections from the south-west to the north-east of Dortmund. These lines utilize Stadtbahnwagen-B cars and have high level platforms at most stops.
In 2008, the lines on the Stammstrecke III (U43 and U44) finally switched to the Stadtbahn system, a newly built tunnel replacing the tram tracks of the former lines 403 and 404 between Unionstraße and Ostentor. Unlike the previous stadtbahn routes, these lines use narrow profile trams that load at low level platforms. This was done as an economy measure to avoid having to relay the surface tracks to accommodate the wider Stadtbahnwagen-B cars.
