Dongseo University is a major private university located in the port city of Busan, South Korea. It has approximately 12,000 undergraduate students and 500 graduate students, including 600 international students from 27 countries. It employs 350 full-time faculty members. The current president is Jekuk Chang (hangul: 장제국 , hanja: 張濟國 ).
History
Dongseo University was founded in 1992 in the spirit of Christianity, with an emphasis on Truth, Creativity, and Service as fundamental academic values. The name originally given to the school was Dongseo University of Technology (hangul: 동서공과대학 hanja: 東西工科大學 ); however, in 1996 the name was officially changed to Dongseo University. At the time of its establishment, Dongseo University offered undergraduate degrees in 8 majors. Currently, it offers undergraduate degrees in 53 majors and graduate degrees in 16 majors. Dongseo University was founded by Dr. Sung Man Chang (hangul: 장성만 , hanja: 張聖萬 ) and the Dongseo Educational Foundation. The following four educational concepts and three visions for academic excellence were set by the Founder in 1992 and have continued to serve as an educational philosophy guiding school policies.
Four Educational Concepts
- Compassionate Education: Foster virtues based on love, service and responsibility.
- Global Education: Foster a global mindset along with foreign language skills enabling students to communicate as global leaders.
- Information Education: Foster information processing abilities needed in the era of information.
- Industry and University Co-Education: Foster an industrial-academic cooperation system benefitting its members and their communities.
Three Visions for Educational Excellence
- Globalization: Through close international collaboration, Dongseo University will focus on providing education meeting global standards. It will also establish multi-faceted, international joint degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Specialization: Through an advanced infrastructure (now including the Graduate School of Digital Design and IT, the Digital Image Design Innovation Center (DIDIC), the Regional Technology Innovation Center for Ubiquitous Computer Graphics Application (U-RIC), and the Im Kwon Taek College of Film & Performing Arts), Dongseo University will foster talents of digital innovation for the 21st century.
- Informatization: Through a ubiquitous information-based system (U-Campus) involving a high-speed gigabyte network, Dongseo University will provide students with familiarity working in high-tech environments using mobile-based systems.
Academics
Undergraduate departments include Business Management, Visual Communication, International Relations, Foreign Languages, Social Welfare, Information Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Architecture and Civil Engineering, Applied Bioengineering, Digital Contents, Design, Leisure and Sports Science, Health & Science, and the Im Kwon Taek School of Film & Performing Arts.
Graduate departments include Japanese Studies, Social Welfare, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Bio-Chemical Engineering, Visual Contents, Ubiquitous IT, and Mechatronics Engineering. In addition, Dongseo University has established specialized graduate schools including the Graduate School of Design, the Busan-Fukuoka Cross-Border School of Business Administration, and the Graduate School of Mission & Welfare.
Areas of Specialization
Dongseo University is a leading institution within Korea in its specialized fields including Film & Imagery, Information Technology, Design, and Digital Contents. It is also home to a newly opened Global Division, which comprises the Departments of Film & Video, International Studies, Computer Engineering, Biotechnology, and the Division of Digital Contents, all of which offer undergraduate degrees through programs taught entirely in English.
Branch Campuses
Dongseo University operates branch campuses in America and China, to each of which it sends 100 students annually as part of its Study Abroad Programs. The branch campus in the U.S. is located at Hope International University in Fullerton, California. In Wuhan, China, Dongseo University jointly operates the Korea-China International Education Institute with Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. The Dongseo University Centum City Campus, located next to Busan Cinema Center in the Haeundae-gu region of Busan, opened officially in 2012 and is now the main location for courses taught through the Im Kwon Taek College of Film & Performing Arts.
