Domingo "Ding" Chavez is a fictional character created by American author Tom Clancy and appearing in many of his novels and video games.

Background

Domingo "Ding" Chavez is a Rainbow operative of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six universe. Born in Los Angeles, California, on January 12, 1968, grows up in a rough neighborhood, and joins a gang as a teenager. After the death of a friend at the hands of a rival gang, however, he joins the U.S. Army to escape street life. Domingo is first recruited to be a member of a secret CIA-run anti-drug operation in Colombia in Clear and Present Danger, at the time, still a Staff Sergeant (E-6) in the Army. He first meets John Clark during the events of this novel and works with him thereon. He has at least two advanced degrees and is fluent in English, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and Persian. He marries John Clark's daughter, Patricia, and name their child, John Conor Chavez. He, along with Clark, rescue a Japanese politician and former prime minister. Soon after the events in the Japanese conflict, Domingo works again with John Clark in implementing "Plan Blue" (recruitment of law enforcement officers as intelligence officers) during Executive Orders. Clark and Chavez lead multiple operations for President Ryan in this novel, some of them inside Iran. He is later recruited into and becomes team leader (with the rank of simulated major) in the multinational counter-terrorist organization known as Rainbow in Rainbow Six. Together they defeat several terrorist groups and prevented a bioterrorism plague. He is later promoted to Director of Rainbow also referred to as "Six" (after the events of Rainbow Six: Critical Hour) a position formerly held by his father-in-law, John Clark.

He reappears in Dead or Alive, as a veteran Rainbow member. After he and John lead a Rainbow team in a successful hostage rescue at the Swedish embassy in Libya, they are forced to retire. Chavez and Clark then accept jobs with "The Campus", an off-the-books intelligence agency founded by Ryan late in his administration. They immediately go on the trail of "The Emir", an international terrorist leader (based on Osama bin Laden) who was planning a series of attacks against the U.S.

Personality

Chavez is shown to have a somewhat cocky attitude, being younger than his mentor, John Clark. He appears vengeful at times, however, he is not shown to be a ruthless, cold blooded killer such as some of his contemporaries. In Debt of Honor, he is sickened after being forced to use a laser to blind the pilots of Japanese AWACS planes coming in to land, causing the aircraft to crash.

Career

Formerly part of the Bravo Company 3rd Battalion ("Ninjas"), 17th Infantry Regiment, U.S. 7th Infantry Division, he is later recruited into the CIA's Special Activities Division.

Domingo is known to possess at least 3 Intelligence Stars (one issued at the beginning of Debt of Honor, one issued for John Clark and himself during Debt of Honor as well as one during Executive Orders) that are analogous to the U.S. Military's Silver Star.
