Plot

While traveling through a region of space, the Voyager crew is surprised to find a Nyrian stranger, Dammar, appearing on board without any apparent warning; at the same time, they discover Kes's absence from the ship. Dammar admits no knowledge of how he came to be or where Kes disappeared to. Soon, other crew members are displaced by Nyrian. Though they take steps to increase the ship's temperature and dim the lighting to meet the Nyrians' sensitive physiology, Captain Janeway suspects nefarious means and orders the ship's systems locked down.

The displacements continue, and soon only a handful of Voyager's crew remain aboard. The Nyrians, led by Dammar, suddenly take action to try to take control of the ship. Despite their efforts, the remaining crew is unable to prevent their displacement; Chakotay, as the last member aboard, is able to grab The Doctor's mobile emitter before he too is displaced off the ship. The crew has found themselves in a simulated environment designed by the Nyrians to house their captives; like they have done with several other ships, the Nyrians have displaced the ships' crews into their respective environments, using the commandeered ships as their fleet.

Jarlath, an alien from the neighboring environment, appears and explains how to move between the different environments. The crew modify the Doctor's emitter to allow them to see these openings, allowing Janeway, Tuvok, Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres to ultimately access the inner workings of the Nyrian habitat. Tom and B'Elanna are chased by Nyrian guards but able to escape by entering a cold environment that the Nyrian cannot stand well. Meanwhile, Janeway and Tuvok are able to override the security controls, using the Nyrian displacement technology to save Paris and Torres from the cold. They then transport Dammar and his second-in-command to the cold environment and obtain control over Voyager. The Voyager crew returns to the ship and arrange for the other displaced crews to be returned.
