Disney Channel is a German television channel owned by The Walt Disney Company (Germany) GmbH, subsidiary of Disney Channel Worldwide, which itself is a unit of Disney-ABC Television Group that manages all of The Walt Disney Company's Disney and ABC-branded television properties. The channel is based in Munich.

Aimed mainly for all ages, its programming consists of original first-run television series, theatrically-released and original made-for-cable movies and select other third-party programming. The original programming is mainly brought by the American flagship Disney Channel.

The channel – which formerly operated as a premium service – was originally launched on October 16, 1999[1] and a subscription television channel of Sky Deutschland. As of January 17, 2014, the German Disney Channel has become a basic cable and satellite television channel.

History

Premium channel (1999-2013)

Disney Channel was launched on October 16, 1999,[1] by Buena Vista (Germany).

In April 2013, it was announced that Disney Channel will start a free-TV version of the channel on January 17, 2014. The pay-TV channel ceased broadcasting on November 29, 2013.[2][3]

Free-TV channel (2014-present)

On January 17, 2014, the channel launched as a free version taking over the Das Vierte channel. It debuted at 6 AM with the classic animated short film Steamboat Willie. General Manager Lars Wagner said that the programme wouldn't only focus on children, but that the Disney Channel is for the entire family.[4]

The launch of the new Disney Channel lead to the end of sharing Disney-branded shows with Super RTL to January 1, 2014. Super RTL then made a deal with DreamWorks Animation and Warner Bros. and is the main competitor of the Disney Channel.

Programming

Disney Channel's schedule currently consists largely of original series aimed at pre-teens and young teenagers (including animated series such as Phineas and Ferb, Fish Hooks, Gravity Falls and Wander Over Yonder, to live-action series such as Good Luck Charlie, Shake It Up, Dog with a Blog, A.N.T. Farm, Liv and Maddie, Jessie and Austin & Ally) and Disney Junior series aimed at preschoolers (such as Sofia the First, Jake and the Never Land Pirates and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse). The channel also airs repeats of former Disney Channel original series (such as The Suite Life on Deck, Wizards of Waverly Place and Hanna Montana), original made-for-TV movies, feature films, short-form programs known as "short shows" (which air more commonly on the Disney Junior block) and family-friendly series (such as reruns of The Nanny, The Muppet Show, Everwood and Gilmore Girls or first-run series such as Baby Daddy, Switched at Birth, Grand Hotel and Bunheads). Disney Channel also airs an original cartoon talk show, Ducks & Friends, presented by Nova Meierhenrich.
