Diego Ignacio Sánchez Carvajal (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈdjeγo ˈsantʃeθ], born 8 May 1987) is a Chilean footballer that currently plays for the Primera División club Unión Española as goalkeeper.
Club career
Early career
Born in Santiago, Sánchez joined Palestino youth ranks aged twelve, thanks to his father Gustavo, that played there during the 1980s, who was member of Palestino's runner-up squad of the 1986 Primera División tournament. Diego was promoted to Palestino first adult team in 2007 by the coach Luis Musrri, who made debut him against powerhouse team Universidad Católica in a 1–1 draw at Estadio Nacional for the Torneo Clausura. One of his promotion's reasons was the injury of first-choice keeper of his club, Felipe Núñez, added also to the bad shape of the second-choice goalkeeper Fernando Burgos.
After an impressive season, in January 2008, Sánchez was loaned to Tercera División side Unión Temuco, team recently founded by football legend of Chilean national team and former striker, Marcelo Salas. Diego moved the following season to Deportes Temuco, Salas' team cross-town rivals, and then he moved to Barnechea, amateur team where was scouted by Unión San Felipe, first-tier club, with which relegated to Primera B in 2012, having very well performances despite of that, among which highlighted a penalty saved to Esteban Paredes in a 1–0 away loss against Colo-Colo at Monumental.
