Dickinson Dees LLP is a law firm. It is headquartered in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The firm employs around 600 staff[1] and has 53 partners[2] across its offices in Newcastle, Tees Valley, Leeds and London. It is ranked 58 in The Lawyer’s Top 100 UK law firms.

History

Dickinson Dees was formed in 1975 by a merger of law firms.

Since 2000 the firm has opened offices in Thornaby in Teesside and in London. It also gained an office in York though acquisition of York-based law firm Ashworths. In April 2012 the firm closed its York office and moved its Yorkshire presence to a new 17,000 sq ft office in Leeds.[3]

At its peak in 2005 the firm had 763 solicitors (including partners).[4] By 2010 the firm had reduced this number to 327 solicitors due to restructuring [5] In 2008, the firm sold its volume conveyancing operation, D3 Legal, to Optima Legal and in 2010 it also exited the Family law market.[6] The firm was also affected by the recession which followed the global financial crisis and in 2009 made 83 redundancies.[7]

For the year 2011-2012, the firm increased its turnover by 1.3% to £46.1m[8] and profit by 10% to £12.1m.[citation needed]

In September 2012 Dickinson Dees announced that it was in talks for a merger with South West based law firm Bond Pearce.[9] Bond Pearce is two places ahead of Dickinson Dees in the Lawyer’s Top 100 Firms 2012 and has a very similar turnover.[10] December saw confirmation that the merger was to go ahead on 1 May 2013 creating a new law firm, Bond Dickinson. As part of the merger the firms agreed to combine their London offices in new larger premises.[11]
