Dharuhera is a fast growing[1] census town in Rewari tehsil of Rewari district in the state of Haryana, India. Dharuhera comes under Delhi NCR region and it is an industrial hub.[2][3][4] Many [5][6] Dharuhera is included as the new growth corridors in Gurgaon.[7] It was erroneously believed to have been founded by one Ahir Rao Nand Ram, but this is factually incorrect and not borne by facts. Nandram was a merely family elder of Nandrampur Bass (English meaning -abode of Nandram )a small hamlet near Dharuhera which still exists. It was customary practice in those days to name hamlets or dhanis after the eldest or first person to bring a virgin land under cultivation. In fact Dharuhera itself was another small hamlet under erstwhile rulers of Pataudi but due to its proximity to National Highway -8 and vicinity of Gurgaon benefitted enormously. With rapid Real Estate boom and urbanisation, population is becoming cosmopolitan in nature and no caste or clan enjoys any dominant status in town The distance between Gurgaon and Dharuhera is 39 km but what should ideally be an half hour ride via road can often take hours altogether due to frequent traffic jams enroute, queues on toll barrier and diversions due to construction activities on the highway and is likely to remain such till underpasses are built at Bilaspur and Hero Honda chowk.[8]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[9] Dharuhera had a population of 18,890. As of 2001 males constituted 57% of the population and females 43%. Dharuhera had an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy was 75% and, female literacy was 56%. 17% of the population was under 6 years of age. As of 2013, after rapid growth, the population is estimated to be 45,000.[1]

Economy

The economy of Dharuhera was mainly agrarian dominated until recently. Dharuhera industrial estate has provided some employment to the local persons. Of late, initiated by an industrial estate developed by the state of Haryana,[1] much of the agricultural land has been developed by real estate developers. Unfortunately Dharuhera's economy is also depended upon smuggling of minerals from Rajasthan. It is not uncommon to see trucks and dumpers laden with stone using this town as conduit for these banned activities which incidentally comes from Bhiwadi in Rajasthan. These mining mafia are rampant often smuggling thousands of truckloads everyday with scant regard for law enforcement agencies. Roads in this town have been virtually destroyed due to incessant truck activities. ,[1] as the urbanisation and construction activity extends from Gurgaon towards Rewari. Dharuhera is now a preferred location for investors in real estate and built properties. Though there are few concerns from Finance Minister lately about this acquired land being fertile and shouldn't have been acquired for residential projects. As of 2013 urban amenities suitable for a town of its size remain undeveloped.[1]

Industries

Dharuhera industrial estate is located on both sides of NH8 and has many large manufacturing plants such as Hero Honda Motors Ltd. (now Hero MotoCorp Ltd.) & DELPHI Automotive Systems Pvt. Ltd (A Global MNC). India’s biggest dairy plant Amul is also in Dharuhera.[10] Carlsberg beer factory.[11] Lumax Industries Ltd.[12] Rico Auto Industries. Others include Sehgal Paper Mills, East India Synthetics, and Indian Oil Corporation.[1]

Urban development

Dharuhera is about 40 minutes drive from Gurgaon and 60 minutes from Indira Gandhi International Airport. Due to its proximity with Gurgaon and New Delhi, Dharuhera had all the makings of the next big satellite city in the region, with a number of developers running projects here but has been deprieved by the short sightedness of Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA). The town lacks good public sector healthcare, educational institutes, recreational centres, public spaces, leisure parks, libraries, art galleries, places for performing arts, stadiums, swimming pools, theatres, multiplex (one is coming up at Bestech city), parking spaces in markets and even lacks a proper crematorium or burial ground. But to be fair to Dharuhera, the town planners in Haryana are generally regarded as incompetent and have done no damage to their reputation as probably the worst town planners in country. The town lacks adequate drainage facilities and usually parts near to NH-8 and Bhiwadi get submerged even after slightest rain due to planning mistakes. But lack of affordable real estate in National Capital Region has made people overlook these problems and it remains one of the most promising real estates in not only NCR but whole of India.[14]
