Dharmavaram is the 4th biggest town and a municipality located in Anantapur district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Dharmavaram is now "Selection Grade Municipality", previous it is 2nd Grade Municipality. It is famous throughout India for producing silk sarees. The Dharmavaram Temples are important places of pilgrimage. Puttaparthi, the birthplace and abode of Sathya Sai Baba is situated 42 km from Dharmavaram. The Railway station is a major junction which falls in Wadi-Bangalore route and Guntakal-Tirupathi route and Dharmavaram-Puttaparthi route. Every train will stop here for 15 minutes including RAJDHANI and other Super fast trains. This Dharmavaram Junction is the end-point of South Central Railways (SCR) and Southern Railways (SR).All major trains pass through this city. There is a lake in Dharmavaram and it is 2nd biggest lake in the district located on Chitravathi River origins at Nandi Hills, Chickballapur District, Karnataka. Dharmavaram is a railway junction which falls under South Central Railway Zone of Indian Railways. Dharmavaram is just 39 km away from Anantapur city. It is one of the Revenue divisions in the district. Dharmavaram is also one of the Roads and Bungalows (R&B) division.
The traditional festivals celebrated by the people in the town reflects the Telugu culture very well. The Major festivals the people celebrates here are, Theru Pandaga (Rathotsavam) - Local festival celebrated on Nrisihma Jayanthi day of every year. Very huge crowd participates in this festival for pulling the Charoit(Ratham/Theru). People prepare variety of sweets for the relatives coming in to the festival. On the next day of the festival Utla Manu celabrates by the people is following traditionally by several years. A 3 to 5 days Durgamma Parusa will held with lot of shops with puppets, toys, ladies ornaments around the Temple Durgamma.
Ugadi (Telugu New Year day) - A special attraction is there for this festival in the town than other places which is Chowdamma Jyothulu organized by the majority race people living in the town. Male People will light up the candles(Jyothi which believed as goddess chowdamma) over their heads and dance accordingly by singing Bhakti songs throughout the night of the festival day around the streets.
Vinayaka Chavithi (Ganesh festival) - One of the Major festival celebrates richly in the town. People establishes Lord Ganesh Idols in various ways and worships for 3–9 days in the town. On the last day people grandly takes ganesh idols around the town and immerse the idols in the nearby tanks which is called Vinayaka Nimajjanam.

Dharmavaram is located at 14°26′N 77°43′E / 14.43°N 77.72°E.[2] It has an average elevation of 345 metres (1131 feet).
Demographics
As per provisional data of 2011 census, Dharmavaram municipality had a population of 121,992, out of which males were 62,186 and females were 59,806. The literacy rate was 71.83 per cent.[3]
Dharmavaram is a taluk of Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh. It has 48 villages over an area of 632 square miles. It was a major Railway junction of the Guntakal-Bangalore branch of the Southern Mahratta Railway with the Villupuram-Dharmavaram branch of the South Indian Railway. The city was said to be founded by Kriyasakti Udaiyar, who built a fort on the banks of large reservoir formed by damming the Chitravati river.

Dharmavaram is a famous hub for pure silk sarees. There are a large variety of silk clothing, and these are in good demand all over the world. There is an area itself dedicated for weaving and selling of silk clothes. Dharmavaram silks is a brand all over the country where pure hand made silks are weaved. More than 1000 Silk Shops are located in the Town and turn-over of silk business is Rs 1000 crores per year. This is major business center in the district as well as in the Rayalaseema region.
The Railway station is a major junction which falls in Guntakal-Bangalore route, almost all trains stop here for at least five minutes. All major trains pass through this city. The "Dal Vada" served by vendors in the station is famous for its unique taste. One serving consisting of two vadas and a green chilli costs Rs 10(as of Aug 2012). NH-7 is the nearest Highway. There is a lake in Dharmavaram.
This city is close to one of the most famous Pilgrimage center and Devotional City "Puttaparthi", which is just half an hour by road.
