DeskSite is a privately held digital media company based in Orange County, California. The company is building a network of app-based video entertainment portals, called DeskSites, which are designed to offer both viewers and marketers certain advantages over cloud-based video entertainment portals, such as Hulu and YouTube.

Technology

For certain purposes, thick-client technologies, like “apps”, offer advantages over thin-client technologies, like websites.[1] Theoretically, an Internet-connected app can deliver a richer, faster, and more personalized communication experience.[2]

A DeskSite is an app designed exclusively for large screen, Internet-connected devices, such as desktops, laptops, tablets, and TV sets, (rather than smartphones). Each app is customized around a specific entertainment brand, (e.g., the Patriots DeskSite, the Dolphins DeskSite, etc.), and automatically & transparently delivers high-definition video to opt-in users.

Like a DVR for the Internet, content is downloaded and stored on the end-user’s hard drive, enabling video playback without an active Internet connection.[3][4][5][6] This video-on-demand system also eliminates the buffering and freezing typically associated with streaming video from websites, allowing viewers to instantly watch their selected video. Other differentiating video playback features include fast-forward, rewind, and slow-motion. Unlike a website, where users typically manually search for new content, DeskSites offer optional audiovisual alerts that proactively engage viewers whenever a new “user-approved” video has fully downloaded and is ready to view.[3][4][5][6]

DeskSites permit marketers to target video ads by exact age and gender, as well as control exact reach and frequency—which is not possible via (open-access) websites, like Hulu, YouTube, etc.

Business

The company’s business is online video advertising, which is effected by delivering targeted video ads to opt-in users of the company’s video entertainment apps[7] (i.e., DeskSites). The company broadcasts exclusive HD videos to users of its apps, and sells video ad space on these apps to national advertisers.[7]

By aggregating video ad space across a large number of DeskSites, the company can distribute video commercials to millions of consumers simultaneously—similar to network television and large web portals, but with the “cookie-free” targetability of an opt-in app.

History

DeskSite was founded by Richard Gillam.[7] The company’s legal name is QDOS, Inc. DBA DeskSite.[7] QDOS stands for Quick & Dirty Operating System, the original name for the 86-DOS operating system. DeskSite was derived from combining the words desktop and website. DeskSite is the name of the company, as well as the brand-name of their consumer-facing software application.

The company has partnered with numerous nationally recognized entertainment brands, including the New England Patriots,[8] Houston Texans,[4] Miami Dolphins,[6] Oakland Raiders,[3] St. Louis Rams,[5] Washington Redskins,[9] New York Jets,[10] Baltimore Ravens,[11] New York Giants,[12] Chicago Bears,[13] and others.
