Dera Bassi is a city and a municipal council in Mohali district in the state of Punjab, India. Zirakpur comes under tehsil Dera Bassi. Dera Bassi is located on the Chandigarh – Delhi National Highway, 20 km from Chandigarh. It is strategically located near the boundary of Haryana, Himanchal Pradesh and Union territory of Chandigarh. The nearby sub town Lalru was once a famous market for red chili powder. The city and nearby area has eight engineering colleges, B.ed, paramedical and management Institutes.

History

The Dera Bassi town was formed from the early Kalsia state, whose headquarters were at Chhachhrauli. There was a big fort (now in ruins state) of Mughal era located at outskirts of Dera Bassi. It is used as guest house by Kalsai rulars . In 1922 Ravi Sher sings visited due bassi after his paramount as the monarch of Kalsai state. Earlier the town was under Patiala district, thereafter it has become a part of newly created Mohali district.

Demographics

As of the 2001 India census,[1] Dera Bassi had a population of 15,690. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Dera Bassi has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80% and, female literacy is 72%. In Dera Bassi, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Education

The main engineering institute in Dera Bassi is the Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering & Technology (SSIET) founded in 1998. National Dental College and Hospital is a dental college at Gulabgarh, Derabassi. and one of the college is G.C.College dera bassi (Govt college)registered by Indian government. There is an old institute named as DAV HIGH SCHOOL ( krishna nagar, lahore ). NOW, THIS SCHOOL IS RENAMED AS SMT. N.N. MOHAN DAV SEN. SEC. SCHOOL, SITUATED AT CHD. AMBALA ROAD.MANY HEADMASTERS OF THIS SCHOOL ARE STILL POPULAR AMONG CITIZENS OF CITY NAMED AS SH.DEENA NATH BATRA,SMT.KAMLESH NARANG AND ISWAR CHANDER GUPTA. AT PRESENT, THIS SCHOOL IS ADMINISTERED BY YOUNG PRINCIPAL SH. PRITAM DASS.

Right now Derabassi is among few cities of Punjab which are on property spree and booming because of property sale.Many big names like ATS,SBP HOME,GULMOHAR CITY are making Derabassi there hub to launch there housing projects which is a good sign as development point of view.Mr N.K Sharma Current MLA and CPS from AKALI DAL BADAL is committed & facilitating better services in many ways to this region by providing monetary and other services to municipal corporation and other departments.
