It premiered on Doordarshan's metro channel, (DD2) on 6 May 1993 until 1997. Subsequently, there have been several re-runs on DD National, Sony TV, and SAB TV till 2005. It is considered as a classic, among Indian television shows. The story revolves around three generations of the Diwan family, who live as an extended family in an ancestral bungalow in the suburbs of Mumbai. The serial takes the viewer through their various ups and downs. Their never-say-die attitude helps them overcome sibling rivalry, relationship troubles, business problems, irksome parents and in-laws. A distinctive feature of this show were its fast speaking characters.[1]
Major characters
- The Grandparents — Sushma Seth portrays Sarla Diwan, the grandmother and stern matriarch of the family. She is a busy socialite who is involved with various charity organizations. The grandfather, played by N.K. Shivpuri, is her hen-pecked husband- a loving, endearing person who is mostly busy playing pranks with the kids.
- The Sons — The three sons are Balraj (Navin Nischol) and Sameer (Shekhar Suman) . Balraj is the serious and sensible son who is always seen watching the events that take place in the house with an amused smile. Sameer on the other hand is funny and witty, and is always pulling everyone’s leg.
- The Wives — Suhasini (Farida Jalal) is the wife of Balraj and Sunita (Bhavna Balsavar)[2] affectionately referred to as Sonu by her husband, is the wife of Sameer. Suhasini owns a beauty parlour and is very charming and sweet. Sonu is affectionately called Chaachi (Aunty) by 'all' the members of the family. The dumb, innocent and adorable Chaachi is an amateur writer who takes her job very seriously, much to the amusement of her family members.
- The Kids — Sanjay (Vishal Singh), called Sanju by family and friends and Kirti (Nattasha Singh) are the teenaged children of Balraj and Suhasini, while Vishal (Sunny Singh) and Aabha (Karishma Acharya) are Sameer and Sonu’s little children. Sanju spends most of his time on the phone with his girlfriend Shilpa (Urvashi Dholakia) - who is now famous as Koumolika), who is always suspicious of him. Everything he does becomes a huge disaster and he is always seeking advice from others to woo Shilpa back. The kids and their friends provide many comic situations to which the viewers can actually relate. Kirti also has a boy in school who likes her; his name is Deepak.
Other characters
There are various other characters who come on and off and add to the fun, including Kareema (Deven Bhojani) the Diwan household's servant, Priya (played by Divya Seth) a conniving competitor of Suhasini, the cute mother of Sonu (played by Shammi Aunty) with her popular refrain, Tere mooh mein keede, Tere moonh mein Dhool ("May there be worms and dust in your mouth"), the bespectacled Deepak (Kirti's boyfriend), Dingoo (the weird friend of Sanju) and Amar Upadhyay who acted as Saahil Chaachu in this comedy. Actor Lilliput, also the screenplay writer of the sitcom, plays several recurring characters in this serial. Krutika Desai also joined the show as an old friend of Suneeta named Chirutha, whose name she could not remember, much to her dismay.
