The twelfth season of Degrassi premiered July 16, 2012, concluded on June 21, 2013, and consists of 40 episodes. Degrassi, previously known as Degrassi: The Next Generation, is a Canadian serial teen drama television series. Although only three school years have passed in the story timeline since season six, season twelve is set in the last semester in the years it aired. Writers have been able to use a semi-floating timeline, so that the issues depicted are modern for their viewers. This season continues to depict the lives of a group of high school freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors as they deal with some of the challenges and issues that young adults face such as homophobia, theft, homosexuality, pregnancy scares, religion, sexual harassment, dysfunctional families, peer pressure, stress, self image, depression, suicide, drug use, parenthood and relationships.

This season again has a telenovela/soap opera format, and the show aired new episodes four days a week, for the first five weeks. MuchMusic announced renewing the series for a twelfth season in June 2011.[2] TeenNick, which has aired the series since 2002 in the United States, announced a summer run, following the season 11 finale.[3][4] Production for the season began on February 27, 2012, at Epitome Pictures' studios in Toronto, Ontario.[5]

Cast

The twelfth season has twenty-seven actors receiving star billing, with twenty-three of them returning from the previous season. Returning cast members include Shanice Banton as Marisol Lewis, Luke Bilyk as Drew Torres, Stefan Brogren as Archie "Snake Simpson, Munro Chambers as Eli Goldsworthy, Annie Clark as Fiona Coyne, Jahmil French as Dave Turner, Ricardo Hoyos as Zig Novak, Alicia Josipovic as Bianca DeSousa, and Daniel Kelly as Owen Milligan, Justin Kelly as Jake Martin, Cory Lee as Miss Oh, Jacob Neayem as Mo Mashkour, Lyle O'Donohoe as Tristan Milligan, Aislinn Paul as Clare Edwards, Cristine Prosperi as Imogen Moreno, Chloe Rose as Katie Matlin, A.J. Saudin as Connor Deslauriers, Olivia Scriven as Maya Matlin, Melinda Shankar as Alli Bhandari, Alex Steele as Tori Santamaria, Jordan Todosey as Adam Torres, and Jessica Tyler as Jenna Middleton. Sam Earle (K.C. Guthrie) starred in only the first portion of the season, leaving the show in the 14th episode, "Rusty Cage: Part 2".

Joining the main cast are Craig Arnold, Sarah Fisher, and Demetrius Joyette as Luke Baker, Becky Baker, and Mike "Dallas" Dallas. New cast member Dylan Everett who played Campbell Saunders left the show in the 31st episode, "Bitter Sweet Symphony: Part 1".

The actor from season eleven who did not return this season was Spencer Van Wyck as Wesley Betenkamp.

Crew

Season twelve is produced by Epitome Pictures in association with Bell Media. Funding was provided by The Canadian Media Fund, The Shaw Rocket Fund, RBC Royal Bank, The Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, and the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit.

Linda Schuyler, co-creator of the Degrassi franchise and CEO of Epitome Pictures, served as an executive producer with her husband, and President of Epitome Pictures, Stephen Stohn. Michael Grassi is also credited as a co-executive producer, Ramona Barckert and Matt Huether as consulting producers, Sarah Glinsli an executive producer, and Ella Schwarzman an executive post producer. Stefan Brogren was series producer, while David Lowe is credited as producer, and Stephanie Williams the supervising producer. The casting director was Stephanie Gorin, and the editors are Jason B. Irvine, Gordon Thorne, and Paul Whitehead.

The executive story editor is Ramona Barckert, the story editors are Matt Schiller and Lauren Gosnell, and Ian Malone is the story coordinator. Episode writers for the season are Ramona Barckert, Sarah Glinski, Michael Grassi, Lauren Gosnell, Matt Huether, James Hurst, Ian Malone, Shelley Scarrow, Matt Schiller, and Brendon Yorke. The directors of photography are John Berrie and Mitchell T. Ness, and the directors are Stefan Brogren, Phil Earnshaw, Sturla Gunnarsson, Eleanore Lindo, Mitchell T. Ness, Samir Rehem, and Pat Williams.

Reception

A writer for AfterElton gave the summer block a positive review, saying that it "has easily been the best-written run of Degrassi episodes in several seasons."[6] At the 44th NAACP Image Awards, Degrassi was nominated for an award in "Outstanding Children's Program".[7] At the 2013 Canadian Screen Awards director Phil Earnshaw received an award for "Best Direction in a Children’s or Youth Program or Series" for the episode "Scream" Part Two.[8] In addition, Dylan Everett and Aislinn Paul were both nominated for "Best Performance in a Children's or Youth Program or Series" for their performances in "Rusty Cage" Part Two and "Waterfalls" Part Two respectively, also nominated were two performances from season 11,[9] and winner, and fellow Degrassi actress, Melinda Shankar for her performance in How to be Indie.[8]

Degrassi was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award in the Outstanding Drama Series category, alongside Grey's Anatomy, The L.A. Complex, True Blood, and winner Smash.[10][11] These awards, honour works that fairly and accurately represent the LGBT community and issues. At the 17th Annual PRISM Awards, Degrassi received an award in the Teen Program category for their portrayal of "drug, alcohol and tobacco use and addiction, as well as mental health issues".[12][13]

Episodes

The first run, of 20 episodes, aired in July and August 2012, for a total of five weeks. Except for the fall finale, this season again aired episodes on the same nights in Canada and the United States. Three one-hour specials aired, the fall finale, another three weeks later, and the finale three weeks before season 13. The opening credits were revised twice this season, to reflect the changing cast, Sam Earle was removed in the 15th episode, and Dylan Everett was removed in the 33rd episode.

Eli and Becky continue to clash while casting Romeo and Juliet, when Becky labels Tristan as "confused", Eli changes the two leads to homosexual males. Tristan tells Campbell he was posing as Maya, causing Campbell to become angry at both of them.

As Tori and Zig's four month anniversary approaches, Tori pressures Zig for an extravagant event. However, Zig is poor and can only put on a show with the help of Maya. Dave has trouble becoming a gay Romeo, and Eli gives him the convincing he needs. Fiona returns to Degrassi, but Imogen is not as excited. Fiona joins student council.

In order to pay for his date with Tori, Zig steals money left in the open by Student Council. He has a change of heart, winning back Tori at the school dance. When Fiona paraded her relationship with Imogen around school, it scared Imogen, but Fiona learns that Imogen needs to be eased into this. The hockey team learns that Dave is playing a gay character in the upcoming play, and Dave reacts badly until Eli talks to him.

Alli finds out that she can finish school a year early, and get an exclusive place at MIT. However she does not know if she is sick because she is nervous, or pregnant due to skipped birth control pills. Jake decides to forego college and work for his father, as a carpenter, but finds he must convince others he knows green carpentry. Rookie hockey player, Campbell, has trouble fitting in with the team, and does not like Dallas' encouragement to find a girlfriend.

Alli goes to a doctor for a pregnancy test, and decides if she is pregnant she will not stay with Dave to have a family. Dave breaks up with her, and not being pregnant, Alli decides she will be more committed to school, than Dave. Jake tries to construct a roof top garden, at Degrassi, with the help of Katie, rather than his father, he learns he still needs the help. Campbell snaps at Maya, on the day of a game, he becomes sick and emotional in the washroom, however he wins Maya back after the team wins.

Jenna meets Becky, and she invites Jenna to her home, without mentioning the Christian group there to meet her. Becky pursues a relationship with Jenna, but it is Becky's attractive brother, Luke, that Jenna is most invested in. Clare receives advise from her mentor, but when she turns down Connor's, he publicly posts her comments on Twitter. Drew finds schoolwork difficult, with his concussion, but a job at the mall seems natural.

Jenna is baptized, in hopes that is all it takes to be with Luke, but he remains uninterested. Becky hears about Jenna's true intentions, and after prayerful consideration, Jenna becomes a stronger Christian. Clare feels humiliated by the Tweets her classmates make about her, she begins trending in Toronto, but accepts the criticism, and overcomes it. Drew skips school to accept the job, and when his mother disapproves, he moves in with Fiona.

Clare pitches some news ideas to her mentor, and he asks for more original ideas from her, to define her, however he takes the school play idea, and interviews Eli. Clare convinces him to let her write it, not seeing that her mentor is very interested in her. K.C.'s mother becomes involved with his life, and friends, he and Bianca decide to set her up with their teacher. Maya and Campbell go on their first date, but chaperone Katie slows them down.

Clare's mentor apologizes for the night before, and she only confides in Alli. He sexually harasses her again, but because he reported that she was in love with him, Clare has no proof, and she decides to suffer alone. K.C.'s mother and teacher are both interested in each other, but the night ends with the news that K.C.'s father will be released from prison early. Maya has another date with Campbell, but she starts to appear interested in him because he is an athlete, they talk, and share a kiss.

Campbell feels he is letting his hockey team down, and decides to fake sick to miss a practice, and be with Maya. The team finds out he was singing karaoke, and Dallas makes him skate until he collapses. K.C.'s father is out of prison, and is showing that he has changed himself, getting a job, and flirting with K.C.'s mother again. Fiona's loft is a mess, both she and Drew blame each other.

Campbell continues to consider his hockey performance, and when he plays right wing, he becomes a hockey star. The attention overwhelms him, and he begins to consider self harm and leaving hockey, Campbell does both by jumping off a catwalk. K.C. realizes that his father is a bad influence on his mother, and when he shows up at their home drunk, K.C. and his mother decide to move to Vancouver. Drew teaches Fiona to be humble, and how to clean.

Imogen designs an intricate and expensive set for the school play, and asks her mother, who she despises, for money. Fiona meets Imogen's father, who has problems remembering things, like driving over the family dog. Katie likes Jake, but is convinced it is not mutual, instead Dallas catches her eye. Becky tries to interfere with the play's ticket sales, by asking for donations to less fortunate.

Imogen is over stressed, with losing her dog, Eli pressing to complete the set, and a relationship with Fiona, she decides to skip school to take care of her father. Imogen's father's health worsens, and Imogen finds out he has dementia, she then decides to let her mother be a part of their life, and returns to school. Jake admits he likes Katie, and the two start dating, Dallas trashes their garden. Becky feels bad for upstaging Adam's ticket sales, and retreats, finding out he has a heart, before finding out he is transgender.

Clare, while skipping the internship she is supposed to be at, learns that the hockey team has been drinking in a back room of the school. When she feels that she has been unsuccessful at proving her former boss's wrong doing, she turns on Dallas, and the hockey team, writing a newspaper article, proving they wrecked the garden, and have been drinking. Drew feels he has lost contact with his girlfriend, Bianca, and other students at school, so uses his money to buy their happiness, and his own. Dave enters, and wins, a talent competition with Tori and Tristan, when his girlfriend, Alli, is too busy.

Eli wants to cheer-up Clare, getting Fiona to organize a surprise birthday party, and asking for Clare to get her job back. He learns Clare is keeping a secret from him, and after he convinces her to tell him about how she lost her job, a fight erupts with the hockey team. Drew's mother wants him to return home and to Degrassi, and to be more responsible, Drew decides he needs to get more serious, and proposes to Bianca. Dave feels that he and Alli are not considering each other first, and Dave breaks it up with Alli.

Principal Simpson hears parents' concerns over Eli's play, and asks Eli to defend it, they learn the bigger concern is the teen suicide, not the glorification of homosexuals. Eli quickly rewrites the end of the play, and others around him see that he is not the crazy Eli that ruined the last play. Tristan does not want to kiss Dave during rehearsals, and tries to find a guy, and a first kiss, before opening night. Becky thinks she can change Adam, only to have Adam find flaws in her beliefs.

The play is about to open, and the lead, Tristan, is nowhere to be found. His friends, and Becky, begin to suspect that the hockey team has something to do with it. Tristan's older brother, Owen, gets the truth out of teammate Luke, and Tristan arrives at the play just in time giving the performance of a lifetime. Knowing that she will have to go to the police without evidence, Clare proceeds with her plan to plant evidence on her former internship boss, but backs out at the last minute, and learns she is not the only one he has abused. Adam sees that Becky can change, and she offers to enter the play.

Becky realizes she has feelings for Adam, and asks him to volunteer for student council with her. She worries what her parents will think, and decides to invite Adam over, without mentioning that he is transgendered. Eli struggles to write a story for his film class, and smokes marijuana after learning Jake has taken it up. Drew asks Bianca to not tell his mother that they are engaged, when they do tell her, she does not take it well, and the couple walk away.

Becky tells her parents Adam is transgender, and they believe that they can change him. Becky struggles between a relationship with her family and God, and a future with Adam, choosing her parents. Bianca talks to Drew's mother about their relationship, and Bianca thinks Drew's mother does not see her a right choice for Drew, Bianca deicides they need to get married sooner.

When Maya's boyfriend, Cam, seems more interested in homework than her, Maya begins to feel self-conscious about her appearance. She lets Tori give her a makeover, and enters a beauty contest, making it to the final 10. Adam tries out for the boys volleyball team, but needs to convince his mother for permission. Marisol thinks Mo, her boyfriend, is hiding something from her, and finds syringes in his bag.

Tori and Maya become enemies as they compete against each other in a beauty pageant, and after breaking up with her boyfriend, Maya and Tori's boyfriend Zig develop feelings for each other. Maya and Zig share a kiss, but after a talk with her sister, Maya realizes her wrong doing, and makes up with Cam and Tori. Adam's nose gets broken in volleyball practice, and his mother finds out, she decides it is time for Adam to see a doctor about getting a prescription for testosterone. Marisol accuses Mo of taking street drugs, but finds out he is hiding his diabetes, the two argue, but make up.

Alli is overloaded with her school and volunteer work, and cannot find the time for Dave. She and Dallas sneak into a swimming pool, and Alli asks Dallas for pills that will keep her awake. To be the lead in Eli's latest film, and to catch the eye of another boy, Tristan wants to lose weight and be fit. After yoga does not work, Tristan decides to cleanse. Imogen's mother disapproves of Fiona.

Alli takes pills that keep her awake for a week, worsening her health and relationships. After she mends the feelings between Dallas and Clare, Alli and Dallas drive to a concert, crashing on the way. Tristan loses weight, and gets a date, but suffers a heart attack when trying to work out. Fiona bonds with Imogen's mother more than Imogen.

Note: This episode features a reference to Drake, the second time in the series, and the third time that a former Degrassi actor is referred to in the Degrassi universe. The first being Shenae Grimes in Degrassi Goes Hollywood, and the second being Drake in Degrassi Takes Manhattan.

Adam gets the number of a fellow musician, and Drew advises him to stuff his pants for his date. The cucumber falls out while they are making out, but Adam's date stays with Adam. Tori feels she is losing Zig, and Zig finds it difficult to be with Tori when he likes Maya. Clare feels Jake is more privileged than her, and Eli and Jake smoke marijuana again.

Note: This is the 400th episode in the Degrassi franchise.

Adam learns that he was played, and Whisper Hug gets disqualified from a battle of the bands, after he hits another musician. Adam meets with his idol, Chaz Bono, the band is re-entered, and Becky and Adam commit to each other. Zig wants to break up with Tori, but Tori finds out first, and Maya decides she wants to remain with Cam. Clare and Jake sit down with their parents, about their double standard, and things are resolved.

Drew and Bianca, along with Adam, Fiona, and Imogen, fly to Las Vegas with won tickets, planning on eloping. Katie finds out that her family does not have enough money for her to attend Stanford University, her ideal school, in the coming year. When their flight to Mexico gets cancelled she, Marisol, and their boyfriends Jake and Mo, change their plans to Las Vegas. At an awkward encounter on the plane, Drew invites his ex-girlfriend, Katie, and her friends, to their wedding. At the boys' bachelor party Drew begins to get cold feet, and wants to tell his disapproving mother of the wedding, and then wants to cancel the wedding. Trying to win money, Katie counts cards at a blackjack table, but loses all of her parents' savings. The next day, she decides to call Darrin, a Mark Zuckerberg parody, looking for a job. Darrin says he will give Katie money if she agrees to spend the day with him, which she does, but finds out he will pay more to have sex with her. Moments before Bianca, and her bridesmaids Fiona and Imogen, enter the wedding, Drew and Adam's mother crashes the wedding. She tries to stop the wedding, but Drew realizes that he is even more committed to Bianca, and that he disagrees with his mother's opinions, changing the mind of his mother, and winning back Bianca. After an argument with boyfriend Jake, Katie returns to Darrin's room, but re-evaluates her life, and decides to take a break from boys.

Dallas lays on the pressure of hockey success, he makes up with Maya, and Zig calls him a psycho, causing Cam to have emotional highs and lows. Clare moves her stuff into Eli's locker, and Dave likens it to a marriage, leading Eli to read Clare's journal. Dallas continues to pursue Alli, who makes him realize he is a bully.

Cam commits suicide in the school garden, and everyone reacts in their own way. Maya tries to focus on music, but her sister, Katie, convinces her to speak at the candlelight vigil. She learns to grieve, and becomes friends with Tori again. Dallas blames himself, drinks, and considers jumping off the school's roof, but Fiona talks him down. Eli tries to work through seeing Cam's body.

Eli has nightmares about Cam, and tries to forget what he saw in the garden, burying himself in video making. Eli tells Clare he took MDMA (ecstasy) at the party, which causes her to worry even more about him, thinking he needs to talk through his issues. After taking MSD again, and streaking through the school, Eli comes to realize that he does not need to talk about what he saw to everyone, and breaks up with Clare. Katie and Jake are friends again, and advocate the garden to be reopened. When Luke sees Jenna with Connor he gets jealous, reminding her of his ways, and when Connor has an outburst, Jenna has doubts, but decides that she wants to keep dating Connor.

Drew moves out of Fiona's loft, leading her to get a job in the food court at the mall with Dave, and a following on Twitter. She accidentally reveals the location of her home, and it gets broken into while she is gone, the intruder is still there, with a gun, when she comes home. Dallas wants to make Alli his girlfriend; he learns Alli broke up with Dave because of a pregnancy scare, and he had a baby with his ex-girlfirend when he was 15. Zig has difficulty dealing with being the last person Cam talked to, and being in French class with Tori and Tristan.

Fiona has trouble feeling safe in her own loft, and decides to buy a gun. When this becomes difficult, she finds a back alley, where she is mobbed. Dallas wants to keep his son from Alli, but she finds out anyways, and their relationship grows. Zig apologizes to his former friends about what he said and did to them and Cam.

None of the boys at Degrassi want to date Maya because they feel that she should still be grieving. Maya tries to shed her good-girl reputation by dressing more provocative, and shares her drunk escapades at a party with Zig. Drew says that he will run for student council president because it could be fun, but is up against the serious Clare, so he hosts a party. Connor has problems when Alli takes time away from him and Jenna, so he plans to get Alli and Eli together.

Maya's feelings are still confused, she continues to lash out to Katie and Zig, not knowing who she should be. Maya's mother and Katie walk in on her making out with a boy, the resulting confrontation finally allows Maya to mourn Cam's death. Drew tries to campaign more seriously, but Clare embarrasses him at a debate, and he thinks he can not be a good leader. Connor sees himself in Eli, and wants to improve Eli's well being by suggesting he get back with Clare.

Imogen and Fiona hope to spend the next year together, but Imogen must remain at Degrassi another year, and Fiona is offered an internship in Rome. Imogen, scared to be away from Fiona, poses as her at the interview. When Fiona finds out, she breaks-up with Imogen, leaving her in tears. Imogen manages to convince the Italian fashion designer to change his mind at the last minute, winning back Fiona. Eli pursues Clare, who is uninterested at first, but he wins her back at prom, and they go to a hotel to have sex. Clare learns she may have leukemia. Marisol is looking for a romantic evening with Mo at the prom, but when he finds out she paid Jake to be friends with him, Mo starts drinking. Marisol is mad at him, until he makes a grand gesture at graduation.
