Dean Kay
From the Rock Revolution to the Digital Revolution Dean Kay has successfully participated in the music industry and an entertainer, recording artist, songwriter, music publishing executive, mentor, innovator, speaker and defender of creator's rights.[1]
Dean began his professional career as a featured entertainer (along with singing partner Hank Jones) on the five day a week daytime Tennessee Ernie Ford Show[2] from San Francisco.
Hank and Dean recorded for both Del-fi Records and RCA Victor.[3]
As a songwriter he provided songs for many top recording artists, including THAT'S LIFE[4] for Frank Sinatra.[5]
For 18 years he ran Lawrence Welk's music publishing companies[6] which he developed into one of the leading independent music publishing companies of it time. He then became President/CEO of PolyGram International Publishing. Today, he is utilizing the ever expanding array of technological tools to enhance opportunities for his current roster of talented creators which he promotes under the banner of his own music publishing operation, Demi Music Corp.[7]
Along the way he has been the chief caretaker of the creative treasures of a diverse group of musical geniuses including Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Cole Porter, Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Johnny Horton, Don Williams, Bob McDill, Wayland Holyfield, Ricky Skaggs, Rick Springfield and many others.
Today, Dean sits on the Board of Directors of ASCAP,[8] The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA),[9] The Harry Fox Agency (HFA)[10] and the ASCAP Foundation.[11] Dean's past included stints on the Boards of the Country Music Association (CMA), Academy of Country Music (ACM), the California Copyright Conference (CCC),[12] and the Association of Independent Music Publishers(AIMP).[13]
Dean's daily email news digest, The Dean's List,[14] chronicles the rapid - and irreversible - transformation taking place in the entertainment industry. It is read by songwriters, artists, prominent music and digital distribution industry professionals, politicians, government agencies, university students and members of the legal community throughout the world. The Dean's List and its sister web publication, The ASCAP Daily Brief (powered by The Dean's List)[15] now reach 170,000 subscribers a day and are included in Twitter and Facebook feeds as well. The service is free for qualified interested parties[16] as Dean's way of giving back to an industry that has given so much to him.
