De (surname)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

De or Dey[1] is a surname such as Bengali, Marathi and other origins as well shared by several notable people; Surname De/Dey comes from surname Dev(Deva). They claim to be descendants of ruling Hindu classes Kayastha but in present society along with Kayastha(Alambyan gotra etc.), classses like Vaishya and Suvarna Banik can be seen. The origin of Dey/De is the subject of debate but as it is believed that they are patrilineally descended from Deva(Deb/Dev) clans of Begal.

In 12th-13th century there was a Hindu dynasty Deva, in early medieval Bengal, ruled over eastern Bengal after the Sena dynasty. The capital of this dynasty was Bikrampur in present-day Munshiganj District of Bangladesh[2] This Hindu Vaishnava dynasty is different from an earlier Buddhist Deva dynasty (c. 8th-9th century) of Samatata, whose capital was Devaparvata. Four rulers of this dynasty are known from the inscriptions: Shantideva, Viradeva, Anandadeva and Bhavadeva.[3] Deva or Deb descendants later used the title De or Dey (as a deformed word/in pronunciation) far later due to Sanskritization, few Vaishya and Suvarna Banik adopt it as their title.
