David Longoria is an American trumpeter, singer, songwriter and record producer.
He was classically trained before discovering jazz, and continued to explore various styles such as gospel, R&B, and Latin. As an artist his Dance/Pop song "Deeper Love",[1] a duet with CeCe Peniston, peaked at No. 14 under Billboard magazine's "Hot Dance Club Play" category in 2005.[2] The newest version of the song is directed at Rhythmic Radio and was released mid 2013, along with his album titled Baila! on the Del Oro Music label.[3] His collaboration with Flamenco guitarist Ottmar Liebert produced a song "A Castle In Spain" which won them a 2008 Hollywood Music Awards nomination and award for Best instrumental Song and Performance. His song "Sunset" featuring guitarist Marc Antoine was released in 2008 and plays on contemporary jazz stations in the US and Europe.
Longoria has produced and remixed many artists including Sparks ("When Do I Get To Sing 'My Way'"), Dr. Alban (Look Who's Talking), Sting (Fields Of Gold album), Andrae Crouch (Spoon Fed Christian), Michael J. Downey (America). David Longoria recently was awarded the ASYM (American Society Of Young Musicians) All That Jazz award for excellence in jazz and commercial music leading the way for young musicians along with Performers Engelbert Humperdinck, Billy Ray Cyrus, Master P, Jenny Rivera and Kool And The Gang.[4] This was awarded in Bel Air, California October 27, 2010.
In September 2012 Longoria released an instrumental dance pop single titled Zoon Baloomba which was remixed by popular remixers including Ralphi Rosario, Mickey Oliver, Majik Boys, DJ Yannis, European remixer Mental Blue and others. Zoon Baloomba entered the US Billboard Dance Music Chart at #50 on October 6, 2012. When it debuted it became the first recording on this chart by a trumpeter since Herb Alpert charted his instrumental single "Rise" in 1979.[5] Zoon Baloomba climbed the Billboard chart for the following 8 weeks reaching #21 on November 18, 2012.[6]
Early life
As a small child Longoria developed a love for music right away. He was known to have sung scales with his aunt Betty as she practiced her opera singing when he was six months old. By the age of 7 he started playing the drums and moved to the clarinet. As a 9 year old, his fingers were not big enough to cover the keys. It was at the age of 10 he watched trumpeter Al Hirt perform on TV. "That moment I knew I wanted to play the trumpet", says Longoria. "I immediately threw my clarinet down on the couch and said I HAVE to do that!"[7] Growing up poor was a challenge when Longoria decided to learn to play the trumpet. His parents suggested he earn money to buy a used trumpet. He put five dollars down on a well used trumpet at a local pawn shop, paying on the layaway for a year and a half before bringing it home. Years later he had the same trumpet gold plated and still currently plays it. The Salvation Army offered music lessons to build their local brass band so the ten year old Longoria joined the band and learned to play there. They loaned him a horn to play as he proved he was a willing and able student. He played in the church band on Sundays where he learned to play music and be dedicated. He was known to practice in his front yard every day of his childhood.
Music career
Longoria discovered the music of trumpet icons Dizzy Gillespie, Herb Alpert, Miles Davis, Arturo Sandoval, Maurice Andre and Maynard Ferguson. He went on to play the trumpet for many other artists including Foreigner, Buddy Rich, James Brown, and Marvin Gaye. When he was 17 he put together his first original music which was released as a contemporary jazz album titled MONTAGE. He featured popular Seattle musicians Walt Wagner on piano, Grant Reeves, sax and more musicians that he convinced to join his debut project. Releasing it on his own, he learned to distribute and promote the record even without the backing of established labels. He sold several thousand copies across the US and Canada before moving to Los Angeles to continue his career.
He performed at Six Flags Magic Mountain and Disneyland amusement parks as well as performing recording sessions for commercials, TV shows and movies. He discovered a passion for songwriting and began working on many other artists' recordings. He worked as a Record Producer and musician on hundreds of recordings including ones for great musicians Sting, General Public, Aretha Franklin, B.B.King, Boyz II Men and many more. Longoria is known for his passionate trumpet work and singing. His love for Latin music is evidenced in the new CD Baila! which features many well respected musicians and singers.
On November 21, 2013 The Los Angeles Music Awards presented David Longoria with their Career Instrumentalist Award at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood, California. Other career achievement award recipients included television icon Wink Martindale and Olympian gymnast Olga Korbut.
On December 3, 2013 Artists In Music announced the nomination of David Longoria for Best Jazz Musician in the 2014 Awards.
