David G. Greenfield is an American attorney and a member of the New York City Council representing the 44th council district, which comprises the neighborhoods of Bensonhurst, Borough Park, and Midwood in Brooklyn, New York.[1] Greenfield was elected by his Brooklyn colleagues to co-chair the Brooklyn delegation and serve as their representative on the Budget Negotiating Team of the New York City Council. [2]

Greenfield is the founding director and counsel of TEACH NYS [3] and prior to his election served as the executive vice president of the Sephardic Community Federation.[4] Greenfield is a long-time advocate for increased government funding for public and private (including religious) schools.[5]

As Director and Counsel of TEACH NYS, Greenfield organized state-wide advocacy campaigns that resulted in private and public school parents receiving tax breaks and private schools receiving more government assistance.[6] Greenfield served as deputy director of finance in Senator Joseph Lieberman's 2004 presidential campaign. Prior to that, he had a stint as chief of staff to Assemblyman Dov Hikind.[7]

Electoral Office

On January 7, 2010 Greenfield announced his candidacy on the Zev Brenner radio show to replace Simcha Felder.[8] Felder announced his resignation after accepting the post as the new deputy comptroller for accounting and budget under John Liu.[9] Greenfield received powerful endorsements from notable groups and politicians from both sides of the aisle. Some prominent ones are: US Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) [10] NYC Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg,[11] Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch [12] NY State Senators Carl Kruger, Martin J. Golden.[13] He received the support of local NYC council members Domenic Recchia, Lewis Fidler, Michael C. Nelson, and Vincent J. Gentile, as well as the backing of the Kings County Conservative Party and Kings County Democratic party boss Vito Lopez.

Assemblyman Dov Hikind [14] was originally supporting his former foe, current civil court judge Noach Dear, a former councilman of that district in an attempt to "box-out" Greenfield. Dear declined to run and Hikind subsequently endorsed former New York State Mental Health Director and long-time friend of New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Joe Lazar.[15] Hikind did just about everything in his power to help Joe Lazar including, allegedly, using $30,000 of Hikind's own campaign funds to assist Lazar's candidacy in possible violation of New York City's strict campaign finance laws.[16]

Political Commentator

Greenfield has appeared as a commentator on many national news shows including Fox & Friends [17] and is a frequent political commentator in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal among other national newspapers.[18] Greenfield also hosts a popular weekly audio show Inside Politics on the Jewish news site Yeshiva World News, with thousands of listeners and is a regular guest on the weekly Thursday night Nachum Segal radio show broadcast on 620AM. David Greenfield has also provided commentary under the pseudonym Dov Gordon. [19]

Political Action

Greenfield recently issued letters to City officials complaining about the parking ticket enforcement blitz that targeted his district in Brooklyn.[20] After those letters were received, the Department of Finance agreed to dismiss those parking tickets.[21]

Religious Beliefs

Greenfield is Orthodox Jewish and prays in Landau's Synagogue in the Midwood section of Brooklyn.[22] Due to his religious beliefs, Greenfield was the only member of the City Council to vote against an August 2010 bill that required the City Clerks office to post on its website, and hand out at its office, information on where exactly in the U.S. and the world same sex couples are able to get married.[23]

Political Views

Greenfield is a political moderate who has made passing quality of life legislation and promoting common sense solutions to government problems his signature issues. Greenfield authored a law that banned the Department of Sanitation from placing hard-to-remove stickers on vehicles that were parked on the wrong-side of the street. [24] Greenfield also co-authored a law that requires the Department of Education to notify parents and teachers about potentially harmful PCBs in classrooms. [25] Greenfield also introduced a law that would stop New York City from towing cars for unpaid parking tickets and instead boot the car. This would save automobile owners the hassle of spending a day dealing with government bureaucracy trying to retrieve their cars. [26] Greenfield's proposed legislation was adopted by the New York City Council Department of Finance as a pilot program in June of 2012. [27]

Electoral history

Greenfield, a first time candidate, won after defeating Joe Lazar. He sits on the New York City Council, representing the 44th Council District. After polls were closed on March 23, 2010, Greenfield had 57% of the vote while Lazar had 37%.[28]
