Two years earlier, Eby came within almost 600 votes of defeating Clark in the same riding in a by-election on May 11, 2011. Clark was attempting to enter the British Columbia legislature after winning the leadership of the British Columbia Liberal Party weeks earlier.[2]

Eby grew up in Kitchener, Ontario, the son of a lawyer.
