Dave Douglas is a musician, most widely known for being in the Christian music industry as the former drummer of the Christian rock band Relient K. Douglas joined the band after their former drummer, Stephen Cushman, departed in late 2000. Douglas had been playing the drums and doing background vocals for the band for seven years. His style often focuses on heavy snare hits on the beat and complex kick patterns.

He sang a few solos for the band, and he has also started a side solo music project called Agnes (see below for more). Back when he joined Relient K, Douglas was also filling in as a guitarist for Ace Troubleshooter, whose frontman was future Relient K bassist John Warne. In summer 2006, Douglas announced another side project of his. This second side project is called Gypsy Parade, and he performs for this project with his wife. He is currently writing more songs for both of his side projects.

When asked to name something odd about every member of Relient K, lead singer Matt Thiessen told how Dave Douglas has two ferrets. This has proven to be true, as Douglas posted a picture of his ferrets on the Relient K Forums.

Douglas has said that he loves airplanes, and said that when he was younger, he either wanted to be a pilot or a musician when he grew up. While he is obviously a musician, he said he still wants to get his pilot's license someday.

Douglas currently lives in Cleveland, Ohio with his wife, Rachel.

Dave Douglas announced October 18, 2007 that he would be resigning from Relient K December 29, 2007. He is pursuing new musical avenues, and he started devoting as much time as possible to Gypsy Parade, the project he started with his wife. That band has been reformed into a band called Attack Cat.

Relient K announced online, "After seven years of touring, recording, and rehearsing, Dave Douglas has decided to leave Relient K. His final show will be 12/29. As a part of Relient K, he has been an amazing drummer, singer, collaborator, and friend. Before Dave joined the band, we were plagued with drummer turnover. Although he was the fifth drummer in two years, the moment he joined was the first time we ever felt like a complete band. He will be missed on the stage and on the road, and we wish him all the best.- RK"

"I know that there have been some rumors and speculation about my future in Relient K. I suppose I should clear that up. The time has, in fact, come for me to leave the band. This has been a very difficult decision, but I know that this is the right one. Relient K has been a huge part of my life and I'm sure that it is going to take a long time to get used to not being a part of the band any more. I've had a lot of good times, met a lot of great people, and been able to go a lot of places. it's been a blessing and a pleasure to work with Matt, Matt, John, and Jon. Also, I want to thank everyone else who has been involved with the band, especially those who have been on the road with us. Our fans are amazing and I want to thank all of you for your support and enthusiasm.

I am moving on to new music projects, and I hope that I will still have all of your support. Come the first of the year I will be devoting most of my time to Gypsy Parade. Feel free to look us up and say hi. Until then I will playing with Relient K, so I've got a few more shows left in me. I suppose that this is my "farewell tour." hopefully I, and the rest of Relient K, will see you at one of them. Thanks to all of you."

Gear

Douglas is an official endorser of Meinl cymbals, Battlefield drums, and Vic Firth drumsticks.

In the "Be My Escape" music video, he used a late-1980s Yamaha Recording Custom drum kit in the Basement scene, but a DW kit at the end. In the "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" video, he used a DW kit with Zildjian cymbals.

Douglas had a solo side project, Agnes.[1][2] His first three songs debuted on Mono Vs Stereo's My Other Band, Vol. 1, which was released in June 2006.[1] The CD was a compilation for members of Christian rock bands to get out side projects of theirs to the public. This project has its own unique sound compared to that of Relient K, although there are hints of Relient K's earlier sound in it. Douglas' bandmate in Relient K, John Warne is considering doing a side project for a possible My Other Band, Vol. 2.

History

Dave Douglas started Agnes in late 2005, after tossing the idea around in his head for a few years. The side project was announced on MySpace by his Relient K bandmate Jonathan Schneck, around May 2006. He has also done some vocal solos in the Relient K songs "Failure to Excommunicate," "Hoopes I Did It Again," "I Am Understood," "I So Hate Consequences," "More Than Useless," "Life After Death & Taxes (Failure II)," "Apathetic Way to Be," and "I Need You." He also did many for their Christmas songs and for their cover of "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything."

Douglas explained the name as being the name of a character in a book that he enjoyed - David Copperfield by Charles Dickens.

Gypsy Parade was another side project by Dave Douglas. Unlike Agnes, Douglas performed for Gypsy Parade with Rachel Hoskins. They recorded a few songs for the project, and released them on their MySpace. They were called "Shining," "In Every Moment," and "The Fight of Dugger Ripley."

Agnes was started in late 2005, and has the sound of Relient K's earlier music. Gypsy Parade has an obvious rock sound to it, but is somewhat softer in parts of their current songs.

A four track EP was released on July 2, 2009 and is available on iTunes.
