History

JDT was founded as Kelab Bolasepak Perbadanan Kemajuan Ekonomi Negeri Johor (PKENJ F.C.) and established itself under the guidance by Member of PKENJ Recreation Bureau. The club has participated in state football competitions before it was premiered in the Malaysian football league in 1988 in FAM Cup. The club changed its name to Johor FC in 1996, Darul Takzim F.C. in 2012 and finally to Johor Darul Takzim F.C. in 2013. In 1994 and 1995, the club won 2 consecutive FAM Cup titles as PKENJ FC and was the runner-up in 1996 as Johor FC. JDT holds the record for longest period in M-League (Malaysia League) competition by any football clubs in Malaysia since 1997.

In 1997, Johor FC was promoted to the second tier Malaysian football league, the Malaysian Premier League (which was then known as the Premier-Two League), and won the title in 2001. After two years in top division of the league, JDT were relegated to Malaysian Premier League in 2002-2003 season. The club earned an automatic promotion to the Super League in 2006-2007 season after FAM's decision to expand the league to 14 teams and was respectively regular top 6 finish in the league. The club was the first club team in Malaysian football league to enter Malaysian Cup in 2000 under former British manager, Bruce Stowell. Malaysia Cup was previously been dominated by state teams and by defeating ATM FA on aggregate in the second-round group qualification, the club itself has marked another record in the division. The club has also participated in AFC Cup in 2009 replacing Negeri Sembilan FA of which the latter qualified but did not proceed to compete in the competition. JDT is the first Malaysian team in the league to have been sponsored by Nike and the first in the country to have its stadium installed with an electronic scoreboard and LED standboard.

2013 season

JDT started off their season with a disappointing 3–2 lost against Pahang FA despite 2-0 advantage in the first half.[3] On 11 January, JDT registered their first win with Aidil Zafuan scored with a headed goal over a nine-man Perak FA with score of 1-0 at the Larkin Stadium, Johor Bahru.[4] Daniel Güiza scored a 30 metre freekick equaliser against Kelantan FA in a 1–1 draw at Sultan Mohammad IV Stadium, Kota Bharu.[5] On 27 January, JDT announced they are to have a five tier friendly match during a 3 week break of Super League campaign.[6] JDT won 3–0 in their first friendly over Singapore S-League club side Hougang.[7] Daniel Güiza blasted 5 goals in their second friendly against H20 Dream Team in Singapore.[8] JDT beat Geylang United 1–0 before registering a 3–0 win over Singapore Armed Forces. In the last leg of their friendly match, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha helped the team to secure a 1–1 draw with Young Lions. JDT resumed their campaign with a 1-0 victory over T-Team FC to continue their six-match unbeaten run in all competitions, including Super League and FA Cup matches. On 9 March, JDT suffered their second lost of the season to Selangor FA with the final score 4-1. With this, JDT's 10 unbeaten streak has ended. This was their second away-game lost of the season. JDT took the top spot of the Super League on 19 April with a win over Pahang FA at their homeground. This was also Leonel Núñez first goal in the league and third goal in overall competition, since the departure of Daniel Güiza. The Southern Tigers squad suffered 2 consecutive losses to Perak FA and ATM FA, consequently at their away games and thus stacks up to 4 away games loss. JDT managed to bounce back with 4 matches winning streak but with a mixed run of results, saw JDT slipped past some chances to gain back to the top spot. JDT ended their season in 3rd placing behind Selangor FA and Super League champion, LionsXII. To conclude, JDT missed the chance to qualify for the AFC Cup next year.

2013 Malaysia FA Cup

Ironically, in the first FA cup qualifying-round match, JDT faced off with Perak FA at Tan Sri Dato Hj Hassan Yunos Stadium in Johor and won with the same scoreline, 1-0, and with the same scorer with Aidil Zafuan headed goal was enough to place them onto the next round. Marching on, the Southern Tigers squad met Kedah FA. Khyrill Muhymeen scored two goals in the first-half to put Kedah in the lead before Daniel Guiza scored in the 70th minute. In the dying minutes of the match, the talismanic Spaniard scored again with a low-driven freekick. Both team were into the penalty shoot-out after a goalless extra-time which saw the Canaries squad defeated by 5-4 with Mohd Syazwan were the only player who couldn't convert a score in the shoot-out. JDT progressed to quarter final against Selangor FA. The first-leg of the quarter-final, they lost at their home game with a score of 1-2. Safee Sali scored the only goal in the match through a penalty-kick, when he was brought down by Peter Chrappan in the 18-yard box. In the second-leg, they managed to gain victory with a 2-1 score at Shah Alam Stadium in Selangor, with Leonel Núñez scored a brace on his debut. That puts them into an extra time but both teams can't manage to grab a win and again, just like in the second-round, were put into deciding penalty shoot-out. Mahali Jasuli and K.Gurusamy kick was saved by Al-Hafiz thus put them through the semi-final. On the first-leg of the semi-final, they faced against another tough semi-finalist, Pahang FA. The match was held in Tan Sri Dato Hj Hassan Yunos Stadium and they won 1-0 with goal scored by Leonel Núñez with a good curled shot. The second leg, which was held at Stadium Darul Makmur, was disrupted by a crowd trouble and had to be called off. The match was rescheduled to a neutral venue - National Stadium. In this match, they lost 2-1 with JDT's Brazilian midfielder, Andrézinho, scored the deciding only goal for the team after three minutes into the second-half. With FIFA away goal rule, they are qualified to the final round. The FA Cup final was also held in Bukit Jalil National Stadium, and they faced against the defending champion, Kelantan FA. However, JDT lost the final by 1-0, after Nor Farhan put the Golden Deers squad in front on the 16th minutes.

2014 Season

Prior to 2014 Malaysia Super League, JDT has made five friendly matches against a number of clubs including from Singapore and Indonesia respectively, as their pre-season warm-ups. JDT starts off with current S.League champion, Tampines Rovers FC which ends with a rout of 7-1 score. The club hold another Singapore-based club, Hougang United F.C in their second pre-season match which ends with JDT slotted home another win by 3-0. Third match of their pre-season saw the club pitted with another southern-based club, Melaka United F.C and bagged another win with Pablo Aimar scored a well taken free-kick to give the Johor-side a 4-1 victory. With 3 consecutives success, JDT are up against Indonesian club, Pelita Bandung Raya F.C in their fourth match. The Indonesian-side almost brought home a win with a single goal margin but Safee Sali leveled for the home-side with 20 minutes before time. In their fifth and final friendlies, another formidable Singapore club, Home United F.C hosts JDT at their homeground, Bishan Stadium. JDT and Home United F.C are drew in this match with a scoreline of 2-2.

JDT hosts Perak FA in their opening match-day. The home-side beat the defensive northerners team through goals by veteran, Amri Yahyah and their new import, former Panathinaikos marks-man, Luciano Figueroa. The latter, saw him marked his debut with a fine finish after been fed by through-pass from Safiq Rahim. On 25 January, JDT suffered its first defeat of the season in an away-game against another club, T-Team F.C. The eastern club-side earned its 1-0 victory by a headed goal by Patrich Wanggai.
